Not hard to get in entry level. Just like any other retail with the exception of really passing the back ground check. Good luck and if he has a decent head on his shoulders he will do just fine. Don't stress about it...

That's actually less of a running joke than we would all like.

Your co-worker, kennymallory1, may already have one of the important beginner attributes: he knows he does not know everything.

What he (and all of us) needs is a reliable source of info; I think the best available resource is C.D.Michel's book,

I have an older edition; it's the obvious successor-in-interest to John Machtinger books from the late 1990s to early 2000s; I think I started with Machtinger's 1996 edition.

One of the critical items is learning the vocabulary the legislature uses to write laws; legal language shares some aspects of 'English' but meanings of laws use different rules. Lawyers like Machtinger and Michel provide important guidance.

So, he should read that, a couple times.

And he shouldn't be reluctant to tell folks he doesn't know something about CA gun laws - that group includes just about everyone.

Actively seeking to learn and gather certifications will make someone more effective and valuable in their job. And for this area, having knowledge about both products and business is also important. The NSSF has a magazine with information for the Shooting Sports business. Old magazines aren't too difficult to find from retailers. They also have on-line courses now. https://www.nssf.org/

Yeah, since the point of gun store is, y'know, to sell guns, as an owner that would make sense.

I was addressing a possible solution to giving poor advice on the laws, especially using "I don't know, but I think Bob over here can answer that" kinds of responses. Until, of course, Newb knows as much as Bob.
