    DES screws up suffix

Not sure if any of you have seen this yet. If your customer has a suffix (jr III, etc..) and their FSC reflects it you cannot properly DROS their firearm unless you move the suffix to their last name. Otherwise the string match to FSC doesn't work.

Since FSC doesn't have a suffix field, the suffixes are typically added to the last name.

With DROS, the suffix is part of last name when scanned, but I usually move the suffix to the suffix field. This now fails since the system is trying to match their name to their FSC record post 7/1/2019.

I find it quite annoying that the DROS system doesn't let you input their name correctly when in fact their suffix is not part of their last name.

    Bloody hell...

I had a similar issue with a person who received her FSC prior to getting married. Her new DL reflected her new last name. I had to run the DROS under her maiden name and add her new name as an alias. It went through and was approved for delivery after the 240 hours.

I imagine that you can do what you need to in the primary field and add the correct record in the alias section. Give it a go.

Too bad that they don't use the DL/ID number to confirm it is the same person, but that would make sense and be too easy.

The first time I had to create an FSC for Junior was this week and I left the suffix off of the last name since I have been there and done that with a mis-matched DROS. And that is what this post says another FFL did.

Did I do the wrong thing and will any FFL tell my customer they cannot accept the FSC because "Jr." is missing from their last name?

If they notice it they might. Auditor might ask (hasn't happened to me) how I know if that's JR/SR.. I have a father/son family that's my customer that have same name including middle and live at the same address.. luckily all their stuff already has jr on it for the kid..as well as III for the other kid..

I did notice that DES doesn't seem to care about the suffix anymore. I recently ran a DROS for JR in the suffix, but no JR was on the FSC and it submitted then cleared. Customer also stated that he previously had two DROS's at two separate shops with identical submissions for his name (I looked at the paperwork) and they cleared.

Now, if the FSC had JR after the last name, I don't know how that would work in DES. I haven't experienced that yet.

                  I did something Kemasa mentioned:

                  Example:
                  Actual Name: A B C Jr

FSC Stores (if the instructor did this):
                  First: A
                  Middle: B
                  Last: C Jr

                  DES Wants:
                  First: A
                  Middle: B
                  Last: C
                  Suffix: Jr
but rejects suffix in its own box so .. in DES for the main name I do:
                  First: A
                  Middle: B
                  Last: C Jr
this satisfies the comparison to FSC

and in the ALIAS name I do
                  First: A
                  Middle: B
                  Last: C
                  Suffix: Jr
which is actually what it should be..

Yes, that's what I've historically done. I might've mentioned that somewhere in this thread already. It appears that DES wants exact match for First, Middle, Last but suffix does not require exact. Perhaps it is there to help them identify.

I do recall seeing JR's pass when it was incorrectly submitted or if the DMV did not include JR on the DL but supporting docs do. I also recall complicated scenarios for folks with multiple names. I think the most that I've seen was 5 really, really long names for one person. DMV really limits those characters on the DL.

Thanks for all that posted as I am a Jr. and do not need another reason for this process to take any longer than it already does.

this all started when the ammo backgrounds started. the FSC card is how dros sees things now.

Hey everyone. I thought I'd put another real world example in the mix.

I'm a Junior. On my CA drivers license my name is laid out this way:

                          Last Name
                          First Middle Suffix

I became a gun owner last year (2020) and didn't have any trouble purchasing a gun at a small gun store.

But, over the last year, buying ammo at 6 or 7 places, there's always a moment when the employee has trouble when running my name. I've tried to have multiple people explain what the trouble is and how I might fix it, but I always get nebulous or conflicting information.

I went this month to buy another handgun. This time I had to go to a big box store (Sportsmans Warehouse) because they were the only place in several towns around me that had what I was looking for.

Stood in line for an hour only for them to say their DOJ Compliance guy has told them to refuse to accept any FSC that is set up like my license is (Last Name, First, Middle, Suffix).

They said the fix would be to have my FSC remove the Jr.

I didn't want to pay the $25 to take the test again. Went back to the local place where I got my FSC. I explained and they removed the Jr. from my FSC free of charge.

Took the new card back to Sportsmans Warehouse without the suffix, though (naturally) my license is still as it has always been. They ran the transaction no problem. However, I'm in the waiting period now. I fully expect there to be a hiccup because of the small differences in the documentation.

After all, my license shows my full name (first, middle, last, suffix), my FSC only has first middle last. My second proof of residence is just first name, middle initial, last name. And a third form shows first, last, suffix.

                          We'll see.

The struggle is real out here for us suffix-ers!

Many dealers overthink this causing hiccups for the customer......alias...suffix ...ect

                            This is simple:
If a field ask for suffix-enter it.
If is does't (IE last Name) don't enter it.

FSC system does not have a suffix field.
                            DROS does.

Question on this. Went to Turners today and they told me that my FSC with no suffix doesn't match my license (with suffix). They wanted to run the dros with my name and no suffix to match the FSC card but then put my name with suffix in the alias field. I declined to do that as I didn't want to use my real name as an alias and I am concerned that may be a problem in the future.

They told me I would need to pay another $25 and retake the test or go back to the Turners I originally got the card from and find the guy who issued it and see if he could "fix" it. It has been a few years and I don't know if that person even works there now.

That said - I have never had an issue with the FSC before. Does FSC card even have a spot for suffix? I have purchased several guns and some ammo since this most recent card was issued in early 2018.

                              Are they right?

                              Thanks.
