Can an FFL limit PPT times/days?

One gunsmith in CA once told me he was allowed to charge $85 for a PPT because he is exempt because he is a gunsmith He does sell new and used guns too. I never went back. Me and a friend had bought about 9 guns there in less than a year. Penny wise pound foolish.

I would think if he is selling and transferring guns, no way is he exempt. The exemption is there for certain circumstances, like service only, or manufacturing only operations. Sounds like he was blowing smoke up your backsides. Too bad for our community that some do this. Not too much different than a car mechanic that tells tall tales. "If you dont get your tranny flushed right now, you will probably be dead before the sun goes down!"

I think everyone who has conducted a PPT knows that as a dealer we only make $10 and that isn't a great deal of compensation for the paperwork and liability we take on. However, it is the law and part of having a FFL. Why not welcome all potential customers into the store and do their transfer as promptly as possible. We did a PPT today and the buyer also purchased some cleaning supplies. I have also sold a revolver to the seller who was doing a PPT before as well. This isn't always the case, some customers pay $35.00 and don't buy anything else but you never know.

A gunsmith only is exempt from having to do PPTs, but that also means that they can't do transfers. There is NO exemption from the limit to fees for a PPT. It sounds like a bogus excuse as to why the FFL is violating the law.

You are insinuating that I am breaking the law by exempting myself from CA DOJ sales, and do not care about the "firearm community" by my actions, I am "not on their side" etc. I do not promote breaking any law. I do think the citizens of this state should push back, however as some gun shops are beginning to do. How else do we change things, wait for the approval from those that would just as soon see us disappear?

The ex-lax comments are because you come off as a rule-monger, and I think you are full of it, but I NEVER pointed any previous posts or comments at you personally, as you have done with me for simply having a different opinion. Gunsmith only FFL are exempt from having to do PPTs, nothing wrong with that. That means that they can not sell firearms nor do transfers, which I believe that is the case with you.

Your comments show quite clearly that you don't care about the firearms community and you support FFLs who violate the law. Go look at ALL of your comments, including that people can just go find another FFL to do a transfer in which the FFL is required by law to do.

Yes, people should push back and I have said that I agree with that. Gun shops should not "push back" by violating the law since the only people who get hurt by that are law abiding people who want to do a PPT, which they are required to do. To refuse to do the transfer only punishes the people who want to buy or sell the firearm.

That is not how you get change. If the people don't do the transfer, they are harmed. How does a FFL refusing to do the transfer help to get anything changed? It doesn't.

At least there is something that we can agree on, well, that, as well as people should push back on all of the bogus laws. We just don't agree on what the proper means of pushing back is, as well as who needs to push back and how.
