I'll 2nd the South Park explanation. They did a good job of depicting Scientology and Mormonism in the related episodes. Don't discard it just because its South Park, its funny and pretty factual. The episodes are probably on youtube.

I started reading Dianetics and looking into it years ago after reading Battlefield Earth (which is one of the best SciFi books ever). Dianetics bored me at the time and the entire energy reader thing felt too scammy, so I moved on.

Weird, weird group. Sounds like a great place to be if you get to a certain rank (given the free cruises, compounds and so forth), but pretty crappy otherwise.
