    Just wondering

Assuming the Catholic Church still uses wine in the Communion service what does an AA recovering alcoholic do?

Well if the alcoholic has this problem, he can certainly then provide a solution to HIS delima. He should bring his own grape juice. Or provide a bottle to the church priest before the communion, in order to partake in the ceremony.

          Problem solved.

I thought only the priest gets the cup. Congregants only get the wafer.

This right here. If someone has this dilemma, they should reach out to church leadership or the minister/priest directly and I'm sure the church would accommodate them. The church would likely buy the grape juice and make it happen for someone in need, but if someone brought their own juice, I can't imagine they would turn them down.

When I was a kid in catholic school everybody drank from the same cup. And it was sacramental wine.

Most of the places around me now use apple juice, and everybody gets their own little plastic shot glass.

If someone is an alcoholic they should let the pastor/priest know in advance and I'm sure that they would be accommodating.

This was the standard practice, at least in my experience. There were sometimes alternate styles of masses offered to small groups (IIRC) where the wine was offered to all, but that was the 'new' thing back in my day.
Pretty sure standard is still just the wafer for communion.

Now THAT'S what I want. Father, could you pour me some of this sacramental single malt?

If your Irish Catholic there is no such thing as a recovering alcoholic.

We only recognize vertical or horizontal alcoholics. And the horizontals we we only recognize so we don't trip on them.

They believe that the wine becomes the becomes the literal blood of Christ. Transubstantiation. So, no problem, as it's no longer wine. And, if you don't believe this you are anathema!

That actually is a good point.
