CDL Learner Permit Question

I don't appreciate the humor, btw.

The topic is serious enough. A new driver has much responsibility, as do the parents of the new driver. Dealing with maturity; judgement; experience; learned driving abilities; appropriate learned reflexes/accident avoidance is tough. It's such a dangerous time for everyone involved.

I'm sure the LEOs here have seen the range of incidents from a warning, to, perhaps, fatalities, involving juvenile drivers. A mere citation is a small thing in the big picture. I'd rather let the Judge/Commissioner decide whether it should be warning or not. I seldom, pretty much never, pull over with the intent to just give a warning.

I agree it is very serious, and frankly I am terrified at the thought of my son starting driving. The reality is EVERYONE makes mistakes while driving. The reality is a stern warning from an officer is enough to have a major impact on most violators, especially a youngster.

I am sorry to see that you pull over with intent to cite instead of the opposite. I am not a LEO so my perspective is from the receiving end of the ticket book.

ETA: Really at this point my question has been answered and this thread does not need to continue. From here it has the potential to develop into something I do not want and did not intend. I thank you all for your input and perspective. As always, I appreciate your views.

The reality is we get zero compliments in putting in a day's work and coming back with less vs more citations. We are not educators. The parents and driving instructors are. If the Judge or Commissioner believes the citation and fine are too severe, only that person can assign traffic school, adjust the fine, assign community service, or dismiss the cite entirely.

Understand. I only pray that if my son is pulled over that he gains something that may save his life in the future, regardless of the outcome.

I truly am terrified of the future and hope that everything I have taught him through the years helps guide him on a path that helps ensure his safety.

I somewhat disagree. Sometimes we are educators. We take on many more roles then just law enforcement on a daily basis. We are family mediators, crisis counselors, mental illness specialists, and yes, educators. Sometimes a quick roadside lesson can be just as effective as handing out citations. Do citations work sometimes? Yes, but I save citations for the people who are a special kind of incompetent. It's just my thing I guess. As beens stated earlier, I'd rather be out chasing hood rats too.

OP, I was in your shoes not too long ago. The only reason I allowed my son to get his CDL was because he was much more responsible than I was at that age. I got my license near the end of the muscle car era and I had one. I did a lot of drag racing in my day. Today, I wish I would have been caught by LE. All it would have taken was 1 time and my mom would have taken my license until I was 18. That would have had an impression on me.

My younger brother did get caught and ended up taking the bus to school his senior year.

I am a HS teacher today, and every year we lose a student or two because they do something stupid behind the wheel. I have students that being pulled over once would leave enough of an impact to keep them driving within the law. I have others that would consider it a badge of honor.

I reminded my son often that the choices he made when he was behind the wheel were life and death decisions and nothing was worth risking killing others or being killed. Finally, if he died it would kill his own parents. I told him to never put me in a situation where I had to tell his mother he was in the hospital or had died in an accident.

I knew it worked when I overheard one of his friends complain that my son would not give him a ride home from school because he was not allowed to have others in the car. His friend said like how would his parents every find out.

Ditto CB723. Then again I can't write more than 1 cite every 2 weeks or my Lt starts getting greedy (if he ever writes 1 a day then maybe I will too!)

I'm more a fan of calling the permitted driver's parents. If they are close enough then have em swing by the stop. That only works when the parents give an S. But when they do, it works so much better than a cite! Plus then I don't have to go to traffic court. Win win!

You could always try explaing the difference between driving and traveling to him. Mybe give him the option to opt in/out if the system...?
