CDL Learner Permit Question

My son will be starting the process to obtain his CA Learners Permit in the next week. I expect he will be driving starting in early December with me (or his mother) as the adult passenger.

If he messes up and gets pulled over, what happens? I do not mean a 25mph over the limit type deal, but maybe something like forget a turn signal, roll a stop sign, lane change w/o a signal... That sort of thing.

If he gets the "driving award" more than likely everyone's (yours and his) insurance costs will go up.

I believe that once he gets his permit, HE would even receive no seatbelt tickets as a passenger instead of the driver receiving one. You need to let him know that he's growing up and taking responsibilities are for his actions are going to start being his problem very soon.

Yeah, and it is already going to be $800 for 6 months to add him. Strange thing though, for a permit he does not need to be added to my insurance, only as a licensed driver. Works for me, but I was really surprised.

This varies by company. I was equally surprised too find that Learners permit is not automatically added. Other companies required them listed once they got the permit.
The price too add the new driver to the policy can really vary depending on the cars in your household. If you have nice cars with full coverage, you may find out that buying an older and smaller and cheaper car for your child and insuring for liability only can actually save you money. You put the kid as primary driver on the car with liability only and he is than covered for all cars on the policy.
The only thing that you need too be careful of is if your insurance co. asks you to sign a document excluding the kid from driving the other cars. I have heard of this happening if you have something like a Vette or a Porsche. The Insurance Co. will not want too insure the kid driving something like this.
I am not LEO, just a guy that raised 2 kids now more than old enough too drive.

I was just using the seatbelt law as an easy and simple example of how he is going to start being responsible for his own actions in/on a motor vehicle as soon as he gets a permit, even if he is only a passenger.

Yes the driver, permit or not, will receive the citation. Of all the people I've pulled over that had a learners permit I only issued one ticket. He was a little a-hole gangster driving around all his little a-hole gangster juvie friends. No one had an actual license in the car and he was acting like his typical a-hole self(I have a long history with him). For the rest, I always let it slide. I understand learning to drive can be stressful enough and people make mistakes while they are learning.

Thanks CB723. That is what I really was expecting to hear in response to my question. I would think that most officers would be lenient with student drivers; well except motor officers. I hear those guys will ticket their own grandmother.

My son started driving last year and my other starts driving next week. One thing I didn't realize till I called the insurance co. Geico requires you to add them to your policy as soon as they get their permit. Not full fee but your rate goes up. Then they go full cow when they turn 16.

I don't care about 5-10 over as long as it's the flow of traffic but I will not tolerate 85 in a 45 as some teenagers might be tempted to do. So he doesn't like it but he agreed to it as a condition of purchase.

Gives me real time position speed and 365 day history. Every incident of speeding, rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration is logged and I get texts instantly. I can set fences or zones up of whatever size I want and it will text me, I.e., left home, entered school, 5fwy at katella, as detailed as I want it to be and I name each fence. He will drive to target and I get 10 alerts so it's like breadcrumbs.

I was tempted to put one on my wife's car but I decided it's better not to know. LOL!

I don't appreciate the humor, btw.

The topic is serious enough. A new driver has much responsibility, as do the parents of the new driver. Dealing with maturity; judgement; experience; learned driving abilities; appropriate learned reflexes/accident avoidance is tough. It's such a dangerous time for everyone involved.

I'm sure the LEOs here have seen the range of incidents from a warning, to, perhaps, fatalities, involving juvenile drivers. A mere citation is a small thing in the big picture. I'd rather let the Judge/Commissioner decide whether it should be warning or not. I seldom, pretty much never, pull over with the intent to just give a warning.
