No, we don't need any of them. We should just carry stones or something.

I have used free military surplus items such as All Weather Goretex outer gear for rainy crime scenes. Used boots for patrol and crime scene investigation. Used backpacks to carry my supplies, free computer bags to carry my computers, etc.

Maybe I should have bought my own items, but when it was given to the department as a surplus, why not use it?

There are uses for many other surplus items. My department used some helicopters for search and rescue operations. They finally purchased some new helicopters from the manufacturers recently. Used boats for maritime enforcement operations. Armored vehicles? Dangerous and armed suspects and rescue operations??? I don't know if we really need them or just wait for the suspects to surrender.

Years ago my old agency got several helicopters via the military. I think I saw about five of them. Out of the five my agency made one bird. They were shot up and all beat up.

Just because an agency gets "five" doesn't mean "five" will be flying. The agency gets extra for "parts." Its a smart move.
