Re-try again a couple of times that day till/if they pass. If they don't then they come back on another day in the quarter.

Our dept made it easier buy purchasing bigger targets for qualifications...I'm not joking either!

I remember one of the rangemasters typed a memo and it stated the Chief failed to qualify. That was the last time his name was mentioned in a range memo.

      100 percent to pass. 26/26

Does (should) not affect transfer / promotion as it is not disciplinary in nature.

We start with a qual, conduct training and end with the official qual.

This is it, in a nutshell, where I work:

Shoot qualification. If you fail, range staff will work with you and you try once more. If its a fail, your supervisor gets notified and you have a short period of time to train (you get SENT to the range as well) and you re-qual. If you fail again, you get sent to desk duty and your weapon gets pulled. You then get mandatory training and if you fail again, I believe it is at that point that you can face discipline up to termination.

As a side note, our range instruction has been getting better over the past few years: Quals are up (despite making them harder) and OIS's involve fewer shots fired with more hits. There are still a few that sometimes fail, but that is a reflection on those officers and not on the range staff themselves. We still do not have enough mandatory (or even voluntary) training/shooting classes like we should (a little above POST minimums) but our range staff motsly does the best they can with what they are given.
