    Stripping Danner boots?

I've got a pair of Danner Recons for work and the academy. I'm currently breaking them in. I'll be putting a shine on them soon but I'm wondering what you guys think about the stripping the factory seal? I've been told to strip the factory seal off the boot and some folks say not to. What's the general consensus and what is the process of stripping the original seal off the boot? Thanks.

Stripped mine 27 years ago. Re-soled multiple times and the boots are still flawless. Wear them every shift.

Since these are quality boots made with real leather, you should take care of them. I would not use any kind of Kiwi gloss or polish. Kiwi will clog the pores of the leather. It is better to use a boot dressing to keep the leather soft and prolong the life of the boot.

What method did you use to strip them? They are great boots, that's for sure.

Saddle soap. Cotton cloth. Luke warm water. Rub circles just like shining them with kiwi. Do until shine and polish gone. Let dry for 24 hours. Start all over with polishing.

I remember in the Marine Corps boot camp that we used the shaving cream to strip the shoes and reapply polish for spit shine. I don't do it anymore on new shoes or boots.

I can't stand Danners, sorry guys. Heavy and hot. Also crazy expensive. Rockys are less than half the price and twice as comfortable. I do have a few pairs of Danners and I never wear them except when my boots are likely to get screwed up.

Had a shop do it for me. I was clueless at the time and just knew I wanted them like glass when I went out as a trainee. YouTube most likely has some good videos on the best way to do it.

Shaving cream has always worked for me.

Paste is the only thing I've ever used. Don't know about spray.

Shaving cream? Do you just rub it in with a rag?

I get great results using toothpaste and a tooth brush. I scrub the boots real good and then use a rag with warm water to clean up the residue. I've been through many brands of boots and always come back to Danners, my favorite are the 10" fort Lewis.

shaving cream - foam, not gel - let it sit on the leather for a few minutes then scrub with a bristle brush under running water until the shiny coating is removed.

if you plan on wearing these boots for duty....I wouldn't strip them down. slapping polish on top of the factory coating and spit shining should be enough to get through the academy. you can then use the same boots for work when a buff shine should suffice and not worry about ruining the water repellency.

if these boots are solely for ceremony, then I'd strip them and spit polish. if you don't strip them, the polish simply sits on top and doesn't get into the leather. over time, with consistent spit polishing, the polish starts to flake off since it's sitting on top of the coating.

there's no shortcut to spit polishing....just time, kiwi, tshirt, and water. I've tried the cotton ball, alcohol, heat, lighter fluid, etc, etc and nothing worked better than mindlessly polishing in front of the tv.

the academy never let us wear boots until we graduated and danners are waaaay too heavy to run in. great for duty wear and comfortable
