Surefire makes very good lights but they use CR123A batteries, which are expensive.
I used a Streamlight Protac 2AA but it got left on and the tail cap bulged out.
Now I have the Fenix E21 which I like, except it has no pocket clip. It seems more durable than the Streamlight.
There is also the EPLI (Executive Precision Lighting Instrument) which is very bright and uses AAA batteries.
If you want a rechargeable, the Streamlight Strion is very bright and light weight.Last edited by Max Power!; 11-22-2013, 6:56 PM. -
I love my Surefire P2X Fury, as far as the price of the 123 batteries. I found by searching the internet for bulk 123 batteries (I used All-Battery.com), with discount code that I also found online I was able to get 50 Energizer Lithium CR123A 3V Photo Lithium Batteries shipped to my house for less then $71.John Mendiboure
This is my shield.
I bare it before me into battle, but it is not my own.
It protects the brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother out of its shadow, nor my city from its
shelter.
I will die with my shield before me, facing the enemy.

try Fenix PD-35...I have one...It is a bright light..Let me know if you want to know where I got mine...It puts out about 860 Lumens and is adjustable in brightness. I got this with 2 rechargeable batteries (18650 Lithium Ion) with a Charger. It is about $79.
Or get a JETBEAM RAPTOR RRT-0 XM-L LED it is about 550 Lumens...This light you can run CR123 or RCR123 (rechargeable) or you can run AA with the extender or 16340 (rechargeable Lithium Battery)....This light is more expensive at about $100 with no extra batteries or charger....
I have both of these lights along with several Surefires...I think Surefire is playing catch up with a lot of other companies....
Message me if you want to know where I got mine from....sigpic

THIS!!!!!! The Klarus is a great light; compact, BRIGHT, sturdy.
SL20X in the bag.
TLR1s on the gun.
Klarus XT11 on the belt.
Edit to add ---
The Klarus has gotten cheaper! I bought the older model (600ish lumens) for about $100. The latest is 820 lumens for $65.

By back-up light I am guessing you want something to back-up your primary light and not a smaller tactical type light. When I first started my primary was a Streamlight Sl20, with a Laser Products (forerunner of Sure Fire) P6 as a secondary smaller light. I kept an old Kel Light 4 cell in my bag. This load changed a couple times with upgrades to a SL20x when my old charger broke, and the back-up in the bag became a Stinger. Stinger's aren't the top of the line in brightness but they do get the job done without the high battery cost of most of the tactical lights. If I was still working that would be my back-up to the full size SL20x.Comment

I've had a Streamlight Stinger for years now as a secondary. get something rechargeable and practical.
A light on your belt, eh... Gone 4+ years of nights without one, and I don't see myself needing it anytime soon.Internetz are serious business.

I second this! I've used sure fire lights which are extremely bright but are very expensive on batteries. Had the strion rechargeable non-LED prior but the LED is bright and last longer. As a back-up light, I get a full work week, maybe two between charges. I do not own any pelican lights but have their cases and can't beat their customer service.Comment

The PD-35 is fantastic. I have a buddy in China Lake Mountain Rescue that lent me his for a shift. At the end of the shift EIGHT of us bought them!
800 Lumens
Separate button to vary the brightness from 9 to 800 in 5 steps
Tail cap ON/OFF
Uses 123's OR the 18650 rechargeable ( 14 bucks for a two pack with a charger!)
less than $75 with 2 123's!
WIN WIN WIN.
I've got a bunch of lights Surefire's / Streamlights - they are "around the house" and glovebox lights now.
