Agreed, I never did like the term, "Accidental Discharge." All guns have a safety, it's called a trigger. Although, I will reserve judgement until a debrief comes out...

One of the linked articles stated the firearm was locked on a motorcycle when it "misfired" (yes...very much the wrong term)...So we may have an issue of either a much different policy of loading long guns in a vehicle rack than my department, or the gun was chambered when it shouldn't have been, or Chino PD just identified a major deficiency with it's motorcycle gun mounts...

I've seen several mounts for ar's on the motors. Some are better than others & some are hacked up mounts made by a depts motor pool garage. The officer probably secured the rifle per policy but the mount allowed manipulation of the charging handle.

Empty chamber, loaded magazine, open trigger.

Sucks for the motor officer this happened to but I had feeling this event was a long time coming.

I saw this morning that a kid pulled the trigger on a parked moto at a DARE event.

Round struck the metal plate at the bottom and fragged.

Interesting to see if the kid flipped the safety or of it was flipped off already.

I mentioned this on the other thread...there was nothing accidental about that scenario. The child pulled the trigger on an unsecured firearm, so it was not an accident. There should be a law that carries heightened punishment for adults who do not properly secure a firearm whereby a child gains access and discharges said weapon...oh, wait.

I think it was the fact that the officer carried the rifle with a round in the chamber. As most calgunners already know, a round in the chamber of an AR-15 means the hammer is cocked. Evidently the safety was "off" on the rifle and the trigger guard was exposed. The gun was secure in the gun rack, but "ready to go." Kid walks up and pulls the trigger.

I'm curious to know what type of system they are using. It would seem more likely than not that the rifle was left loaded, but I wonder if the mount allowed for manipulation of the charging handle?

Yep, again, the firearm was not secured to prevent a child from accessing it and manipulating and/or pulling the trigger to discharge it. Isn't there a law against that? (insert sarcasm here). If the child was able to manipulate the charging handle, that's even more so not an "accidental discharge."
