Before you make a final decision check out Texas Hill Country (North of San Antonio) Elevation calms the heat/humidity down a bit, home/land prices are a steal, community is awesome. We are looking at New Braunfels, Wimberly, Fredericksburg and Canyon Lakes. NO INCOME TAX AT ALL. Property taxes are higher but its all based on lower amounts. You can apply for Agri or wildlife exemptions which cut the property tax quite a bit. Its great there, its Texas so its gun friendly and Austin (State Captitol) is close by so LOTS of jobs. Plenty of part time cop related stuff if you are inclined to pick up some extra $. One guy who I trained when he was a rookie moved there after a med retirement, told me he should have moved 20 years ago, loves it....did I mention NO INCOME TAX???sigpicCertainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter.

I won't be going there.Just got off the phone with Idaho tax commisison and they say that no matter what, they'll tax my CalPERS retirement. The only ones they'll give a break to are disabled Idaho Police Officers over 65, and thats just a deduction rather than an exemption. Now I'll look for prices on a place in Wyoming since they don't tax anyone.sigpicNRA Life MemberComment

My retirement is 50% of my best year tax free, but I'm on my own for medical insurance (except for the shoulder). As such, I can't really afford to be paying income tax if I can avoid it.Comment

Alaska.
No state income tax. They'll pay you a dividend from the oil revenue fund once you're a resident.
Good government, lot's of outdoor activities. If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.Comment

I guess we should check out alaska. Id hate to assume its always super cold and full of bitter drunk, entitled Eskimos...as that's how its portrayed on Nat. Geo. Channel's "Alaska State Troopers". It would be a good excuse to buy a plane and get my license current...Comment

Stay in Southeast Alaska. The climate is fairly mild, but with a lot of rain. The "drunken eskimo" problem is primarily in other parts of the state (with the possible exception of the "Triangle Club" in Juneau).
It's a great spot to fly. Lots of folks have private pilot's licenses and there is a lot a small aviation support. If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.Comment
