    Where to retire to....

....and keep all of my Calpers Industrial Disability pension tax free? If I stay in California, I don't pay taxes on my pension. Any recommendations on what state I can move to and not pay income tax on my pension? I'm looking at Idaho, but it looks like they'll tax my pension like regular income, and its not that much cheaper than California.

Oh yeah, flame suit on for the haters who pop in to this subforum from time to time.

I'm not LEO but I have a question. Does your disability hurt in the cold or make it difficult to shovel snow? I am serious.

I'm looking at Nevada. I know some others who have already moved to Florida and Oregon/Washington. I'm also looking at AZ, but they do have a 4.24% income tax.

anthonyca is correct. Think about the type of disability you have and how you'll fit in without pain.

            BT,
Your disability pension is tax free in all 50 states per federal law I believe enacted in the 90's. Only the portion that is more than 50% of your salary is taxable.

I'll be your neighbor if you go to Idaho, turning my disability pension papers in this week. More retired cops live in Idaho than any other place. Must be a reason. Just got back on an scouting mission there and liked what I saw (CDA area). Taking the family there next week to look at my possible retirement home (24 acres on a lake close to town). One problem though, just can't decide where to put the shooting range and which of the three barns to set up my reloading stuff.

Super gun friendly state. You can pick up a couple handguns and put them in your shopping cart with your bread and milk and take them home.

I'll check with Idaho tax collectors tomorrow...maybe even a tax attorney.

Never been in really cold weather since my injury, but its my left shoulder, and I'd rather not shovel snow to get outta my driveway anyway.

Shoulders here too. The plow or snow blower on my tractor will do the hard work for me.

I have approximately 11.5 years left before retirement and Idaho is high on my list. I love Nevada and Arizona but I think the milder summer temperatures of Idaho or Montana would fit the bill nicely.

Just got off the phone with Idaho tax commisison and they say that no matter what, they'll tax my CalPERS retirement. The only ones they'll give a break to are disabled Idaho Police Officers over 65, and thats just a deduction rather than an exemption. Now I'll look for prices on a place in Wyoming since they don't tax anyone.

go to Nevada no income tax and no sales tax so your money will go a lot further. Also the weather in most of Nevada is a lot better than Idaho area.

Coming from California I think you would rather be hotter than colder especially with a shoulder injury.

My brother retired and bought land outside of Sparks Nevada. No income tax and the climate year round is good. They get all four seasons. Average winter temps don't get below 30*F or above 90*F in summer. That's not extreme on either end! He has mountains to his west and desert to his east.

                            Not bad.
