Was the last hiring and test taking bs? I heard rumors that there were a whole lot of applicants but basically only a handful of positions.

No. There was a whole lot of applicants who weren't qualified , didn't show up, or couldn't pass the test. The CHP needs people. They're looking to get two academy classes of 150 cadets.Only way to do that is if applicants can get through the process.

Statistically, most applicant pools will only give you 1 percent that have the ability to make it all the way through to the academy. Once those folks make it to that point, a portion of those will refuse the position. Of those that do accept and go to the academy, 20 percent will fail. An applicant pool of 10,000 may only yield 60 graduates from the academy. Another 10 will fail their probationary period so a department will end up with 50 good officers.

I believe CHP received 27,000 applications last time they opened. That may give them 100 officers. I completely understand why they are opening the application process again.

On a side note, I hear the number one disqualifier at their academy is the timed 30 second tire changing exam. Not many recruits come in with that knowledge so they have to drill regularly for that Learning Domain.

LoL, just kidding my State brothers. Good luck on bringing more great folks to your department. Stay safe everyone.

The LT nailed it. I would add they wanted 150 bodies in the academy to graduate 100.

Well that is a rookie task, rookie. One of the trainees I terminated, had issues with it.

Best of luck to anyone applying.

I went through a 3 year process trying to get hired with CHP. Passed the written, PAT, QAP, cleared backgrounds and then was put into a holding pattern. Finally heard back almost a year later and had a new investigator, went and did a second (new) PAT, cleared medical and then all of a sudden couldn't pass the same background I had passed the previous year despite nothing changing.
Be prepared to do anything at the drop of a hat for as long as it takes (like, be at a place 150 miles away tomorrow morning).

It's a lottery really. So many great applicants and it just does not happen for a lot of folks. Even more so in the Fire Services. Maybe you are tall and blonde and named Craig? Maybe the oral board leader had a tall, blonde kid named Craig that beat him up and took his lunch in school. So many variables. Just prepare yourself well and take a chance. Who knows.....
