    Riverside Sheriff

Correctional Deputy I or Deputy Sheriff Trainee. Pros and Cons please?
Isnt the Correctional Deputy I position Non sworn?, Ie: almost an outside agency position but still an extension of the agency. If that makes any sense.

Further, Deputy Sheriff Trainee's still work within the jails (close with Co's), but do not have a mandatory time with jails before hitting the streets?

    Correctional Deputy:
*Majority of your career will be inside the jail
*Awesome schedule, only work 14 days per month and you will have set schedule (unless you work in transpo where you work 5 days a week and get every holiday and weekends off)
*Usually lot less paper work (report writing than sworn officer)
*Non-sworn, but you will still be able to get your CCW once you get off your probation period and you can carry everywhere in CA
*Department is thinking about giving correctional deputy a sworn status in the future
*Correctional deputy work side by side with sworn deputy

    Deputy Sheriff:
*Makes more money than correctional deputy
*Does not have set schedule as correctional deputy (sometimes you will have to come work early)
*Lot more report writing than correctional deputy for sure
*You will spend more than 3 years in the jail before going out to patrol unless you request to go work in high desert area

Both awesome job with great benefit and RSO is great place to work.

      BojackUSMC,
I have a few questions. 1. Why would a CD only work 14 per month? 2. What shifts do they have, four 10's, three 12's? 3. I thought that CD's were exempt from being able to ccw as they are non sworn, I thought that was only for sworn peace officers. 4. Can Sheriff Deputies request to stay working in the jails, or is it frowned upon by the Dept for not heading out to the streets? 5. How hard would it be to transfer from a CD over to Deputy Sheriff? Would that person be required to start all over?

        1) 12 hours per shift schedule so we will work 4 days in one week and 3 days next week.

        3) Once you get off your 18 months probation period. You are allow to carry department approved firearm as your CCW.

        4) You could request to stay in jail, but most likely they will re-class you to correctional deputy instead of deputy sheriff.

        5) Very easy to transfer to deputy sheriff, but you will have to attend full 6 months academy unless you already have POST.

Like I said, some people prefer CD than deputy sheriff or other way around.

Not all CD's work with inmates or behind the cell.... you can work at BO (business office doing paper work), ICE unit, classification, gang unit, transpo (bus driver), academy instructor, escort and help medical staff, etc.. However, you will need to get off your probation period before you can request to transfer.

CD can apply at 18 years old vs Sworn at 21 years old. Correctional will only work corrections division. There are admin positions and assignments such as work release/ankle bracelet, inmate programs, and transportation. Plus there are special assignments within the jail such as classification and gangs.

The pros are you will have a set schedule, 12 hours days, with 84 hours each 2 week pay period. So it works out to half the month. Regular staff will always have 3 day weekends and every other will be a 4 day weekend. Corrections is growing like crazy and overtime is there. its not uncommon for guys to get 24+ hours of overtime per check. Some have as much as 60 hours of overtime.

The cons, you will always work a jail assignment, so if you have dreams of being out on the streets it will never happen. There are crimes that happen inside the jail, and correctional deputies can take reports, but its uncommon. Every team will have a small group of sworn deputies that will take the load.

It really depends on your goals in life. If your looking for a stable career, with a set schedule, not much danger, quick promotion, good pay, and a relatively routine work day then corrections is awesome. If you want more out of your career then go Sworn.

How often are the promotions for CD's? Im assuming after your probationary period you promote to level II? What is the top for CD's? Also if you decide to transfer/lateral i guess, over to becoming a Deputy Sheriff what is the likelyhood of the dept sponsoring you?

Do they have a maximum age for application?

After CDII there is Senior CD, Correctional Cpl., Correctional Sgt, C. LT, C. Capt., The department also has a chief deputy who is correctional.

There is a very high chance of being picked up as sworn from CD. Ive rarely heard of guys being denied. My academy had a handful of CD's that were out of shape and unprepared, but they passed backgrounds.

I dont know of a max. age limit. But there are guys who have retired 30 years from military service and started as brand new correctional deputies.

Oh man crazy overtime right now... I could probably work 36 hours of overtime per week right now. Lots of promotion going on in jail right now.

I was searching the web for more info on the CD I position and cane across this post. I have my test scheduled for this Friday . I'm wondering what the hours are for the academy? I'm also curious if after completion of the academy can you choose the jail you would like to work at? Thanks

I also have a question. Do correctional deputies carry Tasers in the jail?

You are way ahead of yourself.
What if I told you the academy was 2000-0500 seven days a week?
                          Would it change your mind?
Just go take the test and start the hiring process.
All of your questions will be answered well before your first day.

*You can carry taser at jail long as you are taser qualify.
*Academy schedule: Monday through Friday (usually you will have every Friday off)
*Usually 0430 to 1630 or 0330 to 1630 (be prepare to stay afterwards)
*Worry about academy and jail life after you get hire and after YOU graduate from the academy

YOU DO NOT get to PICK which JAIL YOU WANT TO WORK... DEPARTMENT NEEDS and DEPARTMENT WANTS...you will be hearing that a lot in your career.
