    LASD M&P revisited...

Sorry, CG wouldn't let me reply to the other thread...

Even the recent class of Security Officers got issued the M&Ps...

Btw Bro (SCD), thanks again for the training yesterday - you and your team did a great job! You were very smooth demoing and instructing - I need to get my butt up there more often so you can square me away!

    A few things thoughts/opinions:

I don't like the stock slide locking mechanism on the M&P - I would rather it have a "lip" or "ledge" for better contact (even with a smoothly operating one). I like the lever on the 92FS better.

Our models are external safety-less. I'm kinda leery about that and would rather have a safety or decocking lever.

Trigger was just OK. Stock is pretty gritty but I really didn't notice it all that much while shooting in a hurry. After feeling how good it Could be, however, the stock trigger Sucks Balls (lol)! I like my 92FS trigger better.

I THINK (wasn't able to shoot back to back to compare) recoil for the M&P was more manageable and follow up shots seemed quicker than with the 92FS - I think mostly due to the bore axis being lower/closer to your grip with the M&P.

I liked the shape and adjustability of the M&P grip but I would prefer it to be a little more "rubbery" rather than "plasticky". My 92FS grip is kinda "plasticky" due to the Crimson Trace LG-402 grips but the M9A1 lower I'm using has more aggressive "checkering" too.

I didn't put my Sentry Lock on the new 6280 holster because I didn't want to go through the hassle. Having my thumb repeatedly push back on empty air before pushing down and forward screwed up my draw all day.

I also didn't swap the 6280 UBL with my 6285 UBL (1.5" drop). That 1.5" extra holster height, in conjunction with the Surefire X300 Ultra sticking farther out past the muzzle on the M&P compared to the TLR-1 on my Beretta contributed to a pretty embarrassing moment near the end of the day - don't ask. All I can say is that I didn't break the record (although that could have also been the staff being nice enough to tell me otherwise).

HEY, for LASD people going through the conversion and picking up gear at Logistics - MAKE SURE THEY GIVE YOU THE CORRECT HOLSTER FOR YOUR SAM/SALLY BROWNE BEFORE YOU LEAVE LOGISTICS! The UBL comes in two different sizes - openings sized for larger and smaller belts.

The Surefire X300 Ultra is really really bright! Levering up/down on the toggle switch handles On/Off. Momentary activation is most easily performed by pushing either arm of the toggle switch straight forward into the body/battery compartment of the light. According to specs, it's about 1/3" longer than a Streamlight TLR-1. By my eyeball, the X300 Ultra looks to be about twice (!) as bright as my C4 TLR-1 and with a warmer LED tint...

It's pretty damn cold up there man!

I keep forgetting about that damn cat being up there - I like cats and dogs but I'm allergic to both, especially cats. Still feeling it in my lungs today...

Btw Rico, during the Sims portion of 391's recent dynamic scenario training morning, more than a handful, maybe even two handfuls, of recruits needlessly ejected Sims rounds. I handed each of them an empty gun with the slide locked back and a loaded mag. Not sure if it was nervousness, fatigue, too much muscle on a chamber check, or something else on their part but it was flabbergasting that so many of them inserted the mag, released the slide forward, and then fully racked the slide again.

Ya, deputies at the stations have been sigining up for the conversion classes. We are definitely not out of M&P's.

You active guys/ladies are certainly fortunate to have such an array of weapons and accessories you are able to choose from.

I had the S&W Model 15 .38 revolver for years, tho you could buy a Colt or other model Smith if approved. The the 92f came 14yrs. after that. The H&K USP .45 was available at your cost. Not lights or lasers and the off duty/bug options were limited. The Beretta Cougar, but not the Mini-Cougar and the Cougar was too big for off duty.

I also bought my revolver during the change to the 92f and the latter when retiring. The county will only give you 2 mags tho since the Beretta came with 2 from the manufacturer; the county provided the 3rd one and they won't sell it or give it to a retiring deputy.

I am glad you have the options that you do.

I loved my old model 15. I had mine for 6 years before I was converted over to the Beretta. My model 15 was used, but the previous deputy who it was issued to, had the trigger pull lightened a bit. It was smooth and accurate as heck. I was quite upset when they allowed us to "buy back" the model 15 , but they would not sell us back the same one we had been issued. They would just sell back a random one.

I wish the department would have switched to Sig P226 enhanced elite rather than the S&W M&P. I shoot more accurately with my Beretta than I do with the M&P. I already own a M&P. Luckily they are giving us a choice; keep our Beretta or convert to the M&P.

I was able to buy back my issued Model 15. So was everyone I know. Don't know what happened in your case. We had 30 days to turn in our revolver, or buy it back. If you waited beyond the 30 days, you got whatever one they gave you.

Like Ron, I too was able to buy back my issued revolver. In fact, that is the only gun we could buy back. I would have rathered have had the Model 66 that was SS. I don't recall when they began issuing the 66 instead of the 15, but I like SS and would have much rathered have had one.

One more thing, if the dept. had become aware that the prior deputy had had a trigger job on a dept. issued gun, he/she would have probably been in trouble for doing so. They don't allow trigger jobs on duty or off duty weapons. At least they didn't when I was on.

I am glad that I bought my M&P and went through the conversion class on my own time a few years ago. I was a bit leery at first to go 10-8 with the no-safety M&P but I got used to it and I love it now. I've been carrying the full size and compact versions on/off duty non stop since 2010 and I am sold on both of them.

I had one dud round in the full size while shooting qual in the trailer so I just ripped it out and kept going. That was the only malfunction with either weapon I have ever had and it was the fault of the ammo. I have taken both pistols out on desert shooting trips and beat the hell out of them. Dirty, dusty, but no malfunctions whatsoever. The M&P with the X300 ultra is an awesome weapon, and the M&PC is a great companion piece for off duty (I tried it as a BUG and it was too heavy and bulky. It also tore up my class A pockets.......

Before I retired I carried my P2000 as my duty weapon. I bought an M&P 9 but never could get into a class before I got hurt and never went back to work. I have the full size and compact. They are great guns and I shoot them much better than the Beretta or my HK.

                I also have the M&P 45......just because.

i have an M&P 9 mounted under my dash in my car, I like it but I prefer to carry my glock 21. I am a dead shot with it, the MP9 is only there cuz it has 18 rounds and its only in case of a carjack or something like that so I wont have to shoot that far haha

Is the dept mandating we install the Sentry lock on the holster?

For anyone thats gone to the class... approx how many Deps were in the class?

The sentry is not mandatory. It will be/is 20-22 per class.

I'll keep the 92FS thank you very much. I shoot it way better than the M&P. I thought about doing the switch and buying my 92 back but the way things are going I can see the Dept changing their mind and telling us we can't buy it back. No Thanks. besides what will I do with all those mags?

the free light is kinda cool though. I had to pay for all my stuff.

Samuelx, I had the same observation of recruits dropping the slide on a fresh mag, then racking the first round out to the ground. Hmmm.....

BTW, I'm on a pencil list for the M&P class for March.

Hey Rico, my comment was in reply to your earlier post on your observation.

Re: sentry - I personally recommend the installation and use of a senty and I believe everyone else in my unit feels the same way. IMO, with practice, any lag time will be minimal/negligible - you will lose more time due to OODA-related factors (e.g. being in fat/dumb/happy mode). That being said, I think the safariland hood thingy is goofy and refuse to use it...

Do the switch, then you buy the 92f and can still carry it. Best of both worlds. Much more variety to choose from now, compared to the choice we had in the 80's when the Beretta was the only thing we could carry.
