Which general police patrol service vehicle has been a turbo diesel?

I have a retired 1996 chevrolet caprice from Santa Clara fire department
Love it but i dont think it can be beat in comfort and performace by anything out there today for LE.

We will be getting the Taurus, but I have no clue on the SUV as of yet. We still have a good pool of Crown vics to go, so I don't think we will see the Taurus for at least a year.

I'm on the patrol vehicle committee for my dept. We just selected the Intercepter SUV. We drove them on a closed course and both vehicles are pretty amazing. We could NOT get them sideways with the AWD. My hope is that they introduce EcoBoost in the SUV in the next year or two...since they already offer it in the civilian version! Oh well...

I want to see one. Havent yet. As far as turbo reliability, just keep fresh oil and filter in it or they will fry. They will cost more money one way or another.

We a have a few of the new Caprices, they are super roomy for the dirt bags, and tight for us and if your tall its no fun. The plus thing for them they are super fast.

From an Auto Tech's perspective, turbos can be finiky. Make sure the oil changes are done, use quality oil, and replace the air filters often. Most of the engine failures that I have seen on turbo cars and trucks, including turbo diesels, are caused by lack of air filter replacements. All it takes is one grain of sand to take out a turbo, which will take out the engine. It looks like Ford did their homework, but you never know until the vehicles are out in the real world.

As for as the Ecoboost Engines go, make sure that you do induction services often. With the Ecoboost engines, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, instead of the intake manifold. The detergents in the fuel keep the carbon deposits from forming on the valves. With the Ecoboost engine, the fuel never comes into contact with the intake valves, so there is nothing to prevent the carbon build up. Carbon build up will eventually cause the valves to hang open, which will cause a loss in compression. That causes misfires, or in a worst case scenario, an engine that doesn't run. It can also cause a stalling condition. Induction services clean the carbon out of the intake system, including the intake valves. Keep up on the maintenance and you should be ok.
