    Police Confiscated Weapons

When LEO Takes a weapon off of a criminal, What is the procedure? Getting it checked into evidence namely. I mostly see weapons in evidence rooms stored in buckets or on racks, is this standard procedure? What about ammunition? Thanks

PS: If you have any interesting photos of weapons you've taken off of criminals.. Feel free to share. That stuff interests me.

Different agencys may store weapons differently. Ours stored evidence weapons in individual boxes.

Firearms in my agency are stored individually. Additionally, each agency is supposed to enter all firearms seized into NCIC and list them as either "evidence" or "safekeeping."

depends on why they were taken....5150 or Domestic Violence are most likely safekeeping till they prove they can own them again. (prove to DOJ)

Off Suspect...could be evidence for a simple possession or used in a crime. they are all destroyed if its a possession charge.

Our evidence room had a row of old school lockers we used.

Pretty much anything taken as evidence will have to be stored in a sealed box or some type of tamper resistant container. Guns turned in for disposal or from buy backs will usually just be put in a rack or a locker.
Ammo would be the same type of situation. In my old department if ammo was turned in for destruction if it was at all usable we would use it at the range, unusable ammo we would give to one of the lgs that could take it apart and sell the brass if they wanted to. Hey it was destroyed, but that was back before all the politicians would get their panties into a twist over something like that.

At my department, if it's evidence, and we're going to take DNA or prints from it, we'll box it up. If its just guns taken because someone was put on a mental health hold, picked up a DV charge, or they were just turned in, we just put them on a rack.

How they are stored depends on why they were seized in the first place.

Our department handguns went in an individual Manila envelope with an evidence label on it. Long guns were stored in racks with a tag tied to it.

I suppose my question pertained to weapons seized from criminals, or gun buybacks.

Such as in drug raids, or pulled over a vehicle teeming with gangbangers and came across some weapons.

From the photos I see, Most of what is confiscated is fairly junk anyways.

Not for personal use ever. If you got caught doing that it would probably mean loosing your job.

If the firearm could be used for training it could be kept.......But in reality 99.9999% are destroyed as the evidence guys just do their thing and don't coordinate with others to see if a firearm could be useful.

Hey guys. Several days ago I posted on this thread and I was not thinking and what I said could have possibly been taken the wrong way. It had to do with weapon confiscations. I do not know if anyone read it or not but since it is a very sensitive topic for me I tend to blurt out things that might put me in a bad light. I hope that I have not offended anyone and if so then I apologize. I am by NO means a cop hater or basher. I was told that what I said might not be taken in the most nicest way so I just wanted to come back here and set the record straight. I saw this thread and I wanted to see what was being said about weapons that get confiscated and turned in and what not and I got a little carried away. I am glad to see that there are a lot of positive posts here and that makes me feel better but anyways. I was not asked to do this but I do participate in Calguns events and I do like most of the folks on this site so I just do not want anyone thinking that I am a bad guy based on a single post that may or may not have been read. Alright. Take care.
