    wire tapping signs?

    Hello.

I might just be paranoid but (this is how it all starts...) when you are being wiretapped, how can you tell?

I ask because lately I will be talking with friends on the phone and we have been talking about current events and guns and what not and at one point I will hear what sounds like a small digital beep originating in my earpiece. I asked if my friend hear that and three times now he has said he heard nothing. I am on a landline and he is on a cell phone.

Yesterday it happened once that I was aware of too. I heard it clear as day. I am not imagining things and it bothers me that I hear one little beep in my phone that no one else hears. I have only started noticing it recently, like within the past week or so recently.

I figure some people here might be aware of what that noise is if it is a bug or wiretap. I do not know what else to use to describe it. I will record my next phone call and then make an mp3 out of it...

Is there any legitimate and affordable equipment that I can get to test my line? I want to know where this beep comes from and my ONLY information that I have is when you hear a click on the line it used to signify you are being taped. Anyways, any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Trust me, with todays equipment, you will never know that your line has been tapped. With all the rain lately, there has been lots of problems with the lines, my moms was out for two days.

          +1

With the equipment and methods used today (CALEA), it is very hard to detect a tap.

All international long distance is monitored, the calls, faxes, and emails aren't bumped up to HUMINT unless keywords or other criteria are met. With digital switches at the hubs, there is nothing for you to hear, the days of alligator clips and lineman's handsets are over. All of our conversations are digitized and converted to packets for transmission. The FBI and NSA have their own equipment in all telco hubs and ISP's.

All of the above is admitted by the government, it's illegal and unconstitutional but no one will ever do anything about it.

So the answer is yes, you and everyone else is being monitored but the clicks and chirps on the line have nothing to do with it!

Well that makes me feel a little bit better then.

I know the information that I have is old but I never bothered to update it and that damn random beep has just been bugging the heck outta me. It does not happen on every call too, just some calls...

Is it possible that it might not be govt or perhaps a private party or maybe that new electronic electric meter that just got installed?

Trust me, if you are the subject of LI or CALEA, the only clicks you will hear are from handcuffs.

Is that these guys? http://www.askcalea.net/ (but something has happened to the website.)

I had a hard drive from someone at Tridia that worked in a CALEA project or two and I happened across their HD from an ebay purchase once.

LoL. I used my resources to search the drive for owner information and then ended up actually finding the guy and essentially sold the drive back to him.

Funny thing, he never did tell me for certain if it was his drive and if I had gotten the right guy, but I saw a photo with his kid holding a box from amazon.com with his name and address on it... I let the issue drop since I knew what the answer was.

Yes and no. I have a uniden set that plugs into the wired jack and then wireless to other bases. But my phone is a landline plugged in with no fancy bells and whistles.

I am going to contact the alarm company too and see if their deivce would be injecting this noise into the phone. It sounds like a digital micro-beep. Meaning it sounds digitally generated and not a long pause, but only lasting for a 1/10th of a second or so, just enough to hear it. And I have only heard it three times now. Twice on my cordless and once on the landline.

                            No.

CALEA stands for Centralized Access for Law Enforcement Agencies. It is the system currently used to allow Law Enforcement agencies access to all telecommunication traffic for their LI (Lawful Intercept) activity.

You are already being monitored by NSA, it just depends on when they actually do something about it.
