    Best wishes.
If I didn't have this gun the King of England could just come in here and start pushing you around.

From: Gore, William Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 11:12 AM To: Everyone Subject: Status of Sergeant Johnson and Deputy Perez

Good morning. I want to give you the latest with respect to Sergeant Craig Johnson and Deputy Ali Perez. Each was admitted to Sharp's Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery. After two hours Craig was brought out of surgery and put in the Intensive Care Unit. He is in stable but serious condition and is expected to recover. Ali's injuries are even more substantial. Following several hours of surgery, doctors found that he was continuing to bleed internally and he was taken back in for surgery. Surgeons had a difficult time identifying the source of the bleeding, but late last night were able to find the source and stop the bleeding. His condition remains critical and there are some positive signs for his recovery. Obviously, neither can have visitors at this time. Our DSA has stepped up to help with the families and both spouses have expressed their appreciation for your prayers.

Looks like Det. Ali Perez is going to make it.

Where did you find updated info?

I was wondering what rifle was used, as they kept saying "high powered rifle". I was actually shocked the words "assault rifle" were not found anywhere.

Just saw an article saying it was a Garand.

San Diego Union-Tribune stories. One of them said the rifle rounds were .308s.

I'm betting both Det. Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson were "saved" by their ballistic vests (and maybe the slugs were slowed down by a door), as it's my understanding that most rifle rounds penetrate such vests rather easily.

Perhaps it was a newer Garand.

Hmmmm....I still see medically induced coma and critical condition. A friend of mine is friends with Perez and stated specific injuries which sounded pretty damn bad. And they are still trying to get blood for him. Dunno which of the officers Kotetu was related to, but any non-news story information would be great.

Subject: Request to Donate Blood - A Message from the Sheriff's Department

                      Hello Friends -

As I'm sure you all know, two of our own (Detective Ali Perez and Sgt Craig Johnson) were shot with a high power rifle on Tuesday afternoon as they attempted to arrest a child molester. Craig is stable, but still has a long recovery ahead of him.

We almost lost Ali the first night because he had internal bleeding and they couldn't identify the source. At one point the doctors came out of surgery saying it didn't look good and we needed to prepare ourselves for the worst. Ali is a fighter and fortunately they were finally able to find the source and stop the bleeding. Ali is still critical and not even close to being out of the woods, but I truly believe all the love and support from friends and family is giving Ali the will and drive to continue fighting.

Ali had surgery this morning, is scheduled for another surgery on Saturday and will likely have more surgeries over the course of the next several months. He has lost a lot of blood and will lose more during the subsequent surgeries, so the San Diego Blood Bank has set up a donation account for him. Ali has O+ blood, but any blood type is accepted and will be credited to Ali's account. See information below.

I am asking all of you to please pass the information below to anyone who is willing to donate.

                      Thank you all in advance!!

Detective Perez' blood type is 0 POSITIVE. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE 0 POSITIVE! TO DONATE. When you go to any San Diego Blood Bank facility, tell them you are donating in Detective Perez' name and provide the following code:

                      CODE: DSVF

Detective Perez will receive all the blood he requires during his recovery and the cost/availability will be offset by donations.

Thanks for keeping up the positive notes everyone. Ali is my cousin. Looks like shoulder surgery tomorrow. He's doing well, considering. I'm not sure when I'll be allowed to see him, but the better he's doing the more relieved I feel. This situation.. there's just nothing like it. I want you to know that I appreciate all of your kind words. For him, for me too. It helps me deal with it. thanks.

Here's the latest on what they think happened. This may not be exactly what went down. Perez and Johnson went to the apartment to make the arrest on the child porn charges. They had the key to the unit given them by the girlfriend, and when they tried to open the door, it appeared to be barricaded. They got it open, and entered the apartment and started to do a sweep. The perp came out from around a corner and opened up on them with an M1 chambered in .308 Perez was hit three times in the torso, and Johnson was hit in the arm, and the bullet traveled up to his shoulder. Johnson emptied his magazine at the perp and hit him two or three times.

This is when the unnamed SDPD SWAT guy who had pulled over heard the shots and put on his heavy armor. He then went up to the unit and help the wounded deps get to the apartment next door. the other deps who were accompanying Perez and Johnson engaged the perp, who eventually stopped firing, probably from a loss of blood. That's as much as the person who relayed it to me knows.
