This. I had a pair that were part of the actual shoe and laced on the side. I had a problem with them in a foot pursuit once (the zipper opened and I almost ran out of my shoe). I would buy the type described by SVT-40.

not an LEO, but I learned about knots at the Cal Maritime Academy. When you do your second knot, make sure you dont do a granny knot and do a square knot. Also before you do your first knot, twist the two laces twice, rather than once so it does not back down.
