    Need advice from LEO members

    Dear LEO members

I have completed all my hiring process for Correctional Deputy I position about 3 weeks ago. In addition, I have been told the academy starts 2nd week of August. It has been little over 3 weeks since I received any update from the department. I have tried contacting my BI, but no luck so far.

Is this mean I am DQ'd for the position? I have not received any kind of DQ letter from the department so I am guessing I am still in the process.

Should I start applying for different department?

Thank you everyone for your help and your time. This month has been very difficult for me.

Did you ever receive an offer of a position? I don't imagine it is much different today than it was 20 odd years ago, but I received a conditional offer of employment, based upon passage of medical and psych exams.

If you got an offer I would continue to call them, in an attempt to find out status. I would keep looking and applying until I know one way or the other.

Not yet, so far I have passed written test, oral board, physical, medical, drug test, polygraph, psych, home visit, and final physical fitness.

You're not DQ'd until you are told you are DQ'd. This is done formally in writing by every dept that I know of.

As for the academy date, there can be many things going on that have nothing to do with you. The academy could get pushed back/postponed, the next class could be full, etc... The BI may not be done with your packet yet, admin may not have signed off yet, etc...

Should you apply to other depts, nothing says you can't or is it typically held against you. Many applicants have paper in at several agencies.

Everyone on the other side of an offer has been through what you are going through. I know a guy who got his offer just over 2 weeks out (just enough time for a traditional resignation letter to his existing employer) from his academy start date...it was a take it or leave it.

Keep in mind that stages like the medical, drug test, polygraph, and psych; all cost money that goes outside the agency (not just OT/flex for some one to sit on an oral board). So if you keep getting sent to the next stage it is a good sign.

        Keep on pushing on.

Thank you, I am just getting nervous because academy is about to start soon and I am still waiting for the final call.

How did you take the Psych and Medical? It's the law that you must sign a conditional job offer before you are asked questions about your medical or psychological history. The job offer will state that upon completion of those 2 things as well as finishing up your background investigation that you will be hired. Up until that point you can take your written, oral, poly, and pat without a conditional. Once you complete everything a supervisor not your assigned BI will give you the stamp of approval.

Yes, I do believe I signed a conditional offer document before going through the psych few months ago. I guess I can still breath since I have not received DQ letter so far. I guess all I can do is now just wait and pray for the best.

Generally speaking, a DQ letter come pretty quick. Get on the horn and finger it out. He might have gone on vacation.

I remember getting "The Call" literally less than a week before the academy started. Got the call on a Tuesday and academy started on Monday. Obviously I didn't make it to orientation...

Hang in there... hopefully it'll be any day now...

I was going to suggest calling your BI. I'll call a contact of mine who used to be a RSO BI but has since gone back to the field. I have a couple of other contacts in personnel. I guess no news is good news. I'm going to guess RSO personnel is pretty slammed.

Don't worry about the change in RSO retirement benefits. Get the job first and at least you will be in CalPERS retirement even if at a lower rate.

No letter is a good thing right now. Just be patient and wait. What's the rush... you'll get through it eventually. Police departments are notoriously slow at this stuff for some reason. People take their time or just don't get back to you at all... I'm pretty frustrated at how it's run actually... seriously, just pick up the damn phone and call someone back, how hard is that?

We all got busy lives but really... we got more than a few directives to get back to people before the complaints fly thick and fast and we do, we have a turnaround time for calls under 48 hours and most do get calls back within the day, even if we just leave them a message or tell them that we're looking into it. At least people know they are not being ignored by government workers.

I got you beat on that; for my current job which I was hired for 11 years ago, I was working mids with BP when I got called at 6 am PST. The lady in DC told me that they could give me choice of offices, but had to report to Glynco in three days. My resignation letter went over "quite" well with management (lol)

BoJackUSMC, don't sweat it. Just take it one day at a time, and have fun in your last few day as a "free" man
