1911 vs glock 21

Tahoe. I have considdered that too. I have a full size s&w 357. I believe its a 646 model with a 6 inch barrel. But being left handed reloads and weapon manipulations are extremely difficult and time consuming. From what it sounds like. I would go with the Glock as well. After carrying a 1911 for duty, swat, off duty, and competition use for about eight years I finally made the switch. I used to hate Glocks and never felt comfortable with them. I knew they worked fine, but they didn't feel right to me. After spending tons and tons of money on over 22 different off the shelf and custom 1911's and 2011's I finally decided to force myself to get used to the Glock.
I did this because I got tired of beating the hell out of my $2000+ 1911's during patrol/swat work. The gun still worked great and I know everyone will say "Who cares, it's a working gun." But, when I spend that much it kinda pisses me off when I screw it up because some parolee has to be a dick and fight. On top of that the magazine capacity was killing me during training days because 98% of the team uses Glocks. I was always having to top off mags and reload. That didn't bother me much at first, but after a while it did. Lastly, one of several OIS's at my department last year turned out to be a fairly high round count fight. I never cared much about the capacity of my 1911 until we debriefed the OIS. Capacity still isn't the prime factor of my switch, but it did play into it.
Once I got used to the different grip angle of the Glock I realized how much more I liked it over the 1911 for duty use. I felt like an idiot for bashing them for so long, but oh well. I went with the Glock 17. The gun fits me well, 17 round mags, and one of the biggest differences was how much lighter it is. My gun belt feels like it's ten times lighter running a glock then it did when I carried 1911's and four mags. Coming from the military I laugh about complaining about weight of a patrol belt, but it really does make a difference. On top of that, beating the gun up climbing walls in foot pursuits, fighting with people, and running around in the rain has yet to do anything serious to my Glock which was only $365 dollars anyway. In the end I'm much happier with the Glock.Comment

The reality of modern law enforcement (IMHO) is such that a hi-cap. semi auto is the best option. I know many guys who can/could reload a wheel gun in seconds, but for most, having a boatload of rounds in each mag is the way to go.

Great Intel hitman. I took the weight into consideration too when I was comparing the two. Plus mine is a stainless so it does weight a bit more than the glock 21.
Those are two things that detract from the 1911. The weight and the capacity. Alot of people are saying the same go with a glock 17. So I think I'm going to do just that.Plato: to do injustice is more disgraceful than to suffer it.Comment

Tahoe. Definatly. I totally agree. Although I do definatly respect those who can manipulate a revolver very efficiently. But when it comes to practicality I think I have better options.Plato: to do injustice is more disgraceful than to suffer it.Comment

What academy are you going to be attending?
I know when I went through, SAO guns and revolvers were not allowed, nor was using home reloads. That said we had a pretty open firearm list and I went through with a P226 .357 SIG. Most of the class had Glocks (mostly 17's, but a few 22's, and a 19), with one M&P, one HK, three Sigs (2x P226, 1 P229), and a couple Beretta 92's. I would suggest talking with the academy firearm instructor and make sure whatever you get is good to go. Also, my academy arranged for us to go to Proforce and buy from them if we wanted to (showing a letter from our academy to gain entry), and if you buy a Glock, they have some killer pricing on them (you'll need to inquire if your academy has such an arrangement).-Sean CaseyComment

I concur with the G17 if you can swing it. I have a G34 that I train with in conjunction with my G35 in .40. The 9mm is such a great weapon to shoot, I can see how the G17 would have a host of advantages.
However, if you can't get another pistol, go with either the G23 or G21. Neither will ever let you down.Comment

Sean. The academy I will be attending with on located at San Bernardino Valley College. Its a police Academy in the criminal justice division. The information packet dosn't list any prohibited firearms, but yet it is also very vague. So Im not very sure.
Ewilke and bc I agree with both of you. The capacity is great in glocks, and even better in the 17s. There is no comparing to the 1911 when it comes to capacity.Plato: to do injustice is more disgraceful than to suffer it.Comment

That is the academy I graduated from. Class #30.
The basic info packet is just a general overview, you'll get more information once you start. You'll have some time to get gear after the start since range doesn't start until a short time in.
But I can confirm that wheel guns and SAO guns are out of the question. On day one the firearms instructor will give you more detailed information on what gear to get. You'll enjoy day one... hahahaha
BTW since you are in the IE, if you are available next weekend come on out to the CGN IE Chapter shoot: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=544782-Sean CaseyComment

Haha. No way you graduated from there ? Sweet. Small world. I think if I heard right I might be class # 36 but I'm not exactly sure. So I guess that means Ill have to start looking for a beretta, sig, or hk . Thanks for the info.
So did you end being employed as an officer after the academy? How was the academy ?
I might be up for a shoot next weekend. I'll look into it. Me and some friends are suppose to go shooting tomorrow or Sunday for that matter. You know of any legal shoot areas. I know there is an area off the 330 in running springs and then there is one in lucerne valley on the back side of big bear. Were looking for a place that's a legal shooting area not an actual shooting range itself. I'm going with one of my marine sniper friends so were looking to do some serious long range shooting. His friends rented a rhino off road vehicle so were going to off road somewhere and blast some stuff. I'm looking forward to it.Plato: to do injustice is more disgraceful than to suffer it.Comment

Well, don't forget that striker fired guns are ok as well so any full size glock, M&P, or FNP is ok as well. FWIW the instructor loves Glocks..
The academy is your typical high stress academy. SBVC logs more hours of PT than any other academy in the state execept for the CHP academy. I haven't been picked up yet, but it is a tough market and I have been limited in the number of agencies I could apply to due to some personal reasons.-Sean CaseyComment

I get my holsters from LA Action in San Jose and 10-8 Police Supply in Santa Clara. I've bought multiple holsters from them and they always seem to have plenty of southpaw holsters in stock.Comment
