I took everyone's advice and bought a lockable soft case. (previous case wasn't one that was able to lock) The VooDoo Tactical 42". I was under the impression that this would mean it was "concealed". It has pouches for handguns that are also lockable. Would I be able to carry a handgun in there as well or would the new Jan 1st law prevent that whatsoever? I guess I'm still confused with the whole "concealed" meaning.

When one is talking about California law, 'concealed' applies only to handguns, guns that are capable of being concealed. PC 16530 says
16530. (a) As used in this part, the terms "firearm capable of
being concealed upon the person," "pistol," and "revolver" apply to
and include any device designed to be used as a weapon, from which is
expelled a projectile by the force of any explosion, or other form
of combustion, and that has a barrel less than 16 inches in length.
These terms also include any device that has a barrel 16 inches or
more in length which is designed to be interchanged with a barrel
less than 16 inches in length.
        (b) Nothing shall prevent a device defined as a "firearm capable
of being concealed upon the person," "pistol," or "revolver" from
also being found to be a short-barreled rifle or a short-barreled
        shotgun.
If a firearm does not meet this definition, then concealed weapon laws - PC 25400 - do not apply.

In short, don't worry about carrying a rifle in a case.

Your earlier suggestion about carrying magazines openly is a leftover from the Unloaded Open Carry idea, but still related only to concealable firearms; concealed magazines with ammunition in them, for a rifle, are no problem. Concealed magazines with ammunition in them, for a handgun, are ALSO no problem so long as the handgun itself is being carried unloaded in a locked container, as described in PC 16850. That method of carry, concealed, is an exception to committing the crime of unlawfully carrying a concealed handgun. Those loaded magazines may be carried in the same locked container/case/bag compartment as the handgun, if you like.

The locking handgun pouches you describe probably meet that description.

I've sat here reading up on open carry and I'm still a bit confused.

-So open carrying a long rifle (I have a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22) is legal. I read even having a magazine in it is still legal, as long as it is not loaded.

-Carrying loaded magazines in plain sight is legal. They can not be concealed.

          -Carrying ammo is legal.

How would I go about walking to the range with all of this? I have 4 magazines. I usually bring a box of 375 rounds.

Let's say, hypothetically, I carried my unloaded gun on a sling attached to me and had the 4 unloaded magazines in a clear plastic bag with the box of ammo. Is this a legal way to transport it all on foot?

Lastly, I also have a MP5-22. Can my brother carry that? Or do the legal owner of the gun have to?

Thanks guys. Appreciate the help in clarifying this.
Why aren't you using a bag for your guns when you transport in the first place? Go buy a bag - now it's clarified

Well, as I said in the thread, I had a rifle case which I used to transport. But it wasn't lockable and I was unclear as to if "walking" with it in that would consider it "concealed". Hence my questions.

I've since, as I said, purchased a lockable case, so case closed.

              Now you're clarified.

I mean no disrespect to the OP and I certainly do not intend to flame him personally. I do however think that the number one thing missing in society today is Common Sense.

I call it Cranial Rectosis. LEO's spend the bulk of their time dealing with people that don't like them in situations that regularly put their lives at risk. Given that single fact, why in the hell would anyone who claims to be a responsible gun owner want to do anything that would cause LEO's another situation to deal with.

You simply have to think further than your rights. Having the right to do something doesn't mean it's right to do.

I swear, I'm starting to long for the day when stupidity is a crime. I'm not talking about ignorance, I'm talking about deliberate stupidity.

                  Get one of these.

Just mind gun-free zones and make sure the rifle isn't loaded and you're GTG.

I actually did get something very similar to that. Sweet case.

How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking? My buddy picked one up at a gun show for like $35.

WOW. Was it used? Even used that'd be an amazing price. I bought it at Ammo Bros for $95 plus tax. It is the 42" version with lockable zippers, two rifles, 6 rifle mags and can hold two handguns as well with 8 handgun mags. Very good quality.

                              Yes.. I read the thread

My point, if there is one, is due to how many videos I've seen lately of folks doing things that in my mind are actually meant to draw attention to themselves and ultimately, that's the kind of stuff that gets the air time.

I know I'd be a little unnerved if I saw someone walking through my neighborhood carrying a slung rifle when it's just easier, and in my mind smarter to just put it in a case.

Like I said, I wasn't targeting the OP specifically as it was a hypothetical question. Problem is, it's not always a hypothetical situation and I've seen people who appear to be trying hard to be stupid.
