I can't wait sir... can't wait to wear the LASD uniform.
Do I have to buy my own gun at the academy or do they issue
    me one sir?
I would love to use sig p226 if possible when I do get hire down
    the road.

When i taught the LASD academy class last Friday, I saw that the recruits were issued a S&W M&P 9mm with a Surefire X300 light. What a difference it was compared to my class in 1986. I was issued a S&W model 67, 38 Special revolver with 2 speedy loaders.

LASD authorized many firearms for on and off duty use. Sig is one of them. I carry a Sig P226 9mm on and off duty.

I could only pray I get hire soon....

Because they've had a hiring freeze for awhile, but the retirement process of course, continued. This has occurred over the decades. At one time in the early 1980s, when I worked recruitment, they were hiring daily and going out of state to do so. When I went to the jail as a sgt. in 1997, there had been a hiring freeze for about 5yrs.

As was said, they issue you one. Once you graduate, you can purchase, at your expense, any of the permitted on duty weapons you desire for duty use.

Gnome, I whole heartedly agree with your comments about those who have relatives on the dept. There are exceptions of course. I worked with one at MCJ whose father was an Inspector (the old name for a Commander). He knew he could have moved fast, but he told his dad he would refuse any position he didn't obtain on merit. He went to the places he wanted to go, but put the time in to get there, so he knew it was on merit.

The ones that don't are highly resented by others and it really doesn't help morale.

Looks like LASD is one of the very few who are currently hiring in California. Good for them; I still have a good friend who is still in the jails and waiting to get out on patrol.

And the fact that the state is about to dump a bunch of prisoners on the county jails, which is the same reason we're going to be hiring 250 corrections deputies.

In his quest to get hired, my son put himself through the San Bernardino County Sheriff's academy. That means straight to the jail after he gets sworn in. Psych and physical all done and results are in so we are hoping he'll get sworn in this next week. Nothing, and I mean nothing, would make the twilight of my career better than to pin the star onto his chest. I am trying to surprise him and get the powers at HQ to allow him to wear my original deputy badge from 33 years ago. Now THAT would be sweet!!!

I dont know if that would be sweet, as the new guy I wouldnt want anything special about me out of the ordinary to stick out besides my kick butt work ethic.
But as a father I could only imagine how proud that would make you.

Who is going to know? The Sheriff that swears him in and a couple people from personnel who did his background. I used to work patrol with the Sheriff and he knows my M.O. regarding special recognition. I don't see it being an issue.

What I do know to be true is I have worked long and hard at this job and have proven myself to the Commnad Staff as well as the good citizens of the communities I have worked. My reputation of 33+ years is that of the guy you'd go to when the right decisions need to be made. If anything, all he has to prove is he is a solid employee. That is all I expect out of anyone who I have trained, worked with or supervised. My expectations of him will be far above those of the new breed of supervisor.

That said, proud dad is an understatement. I just hope I don't turn into a whimpering excuse of a man when I pin the tin onto his uniform shirt!!!

Ernie, that is pretty much the ultimate... Unless you are pinning on him a badge that your father passed to you then to him. Now that would be really sweet!

Congrats brother. Hope it all works out. You want him at West Valley first or Central?

Ernie, I saw the pinning occur many times when I went to the graduation of a friend who had become a SB deputy. He wasn't pinned as he was a deputy from Utah and didn't have family here, but I saw a lot of other proud fathers, mothers and brothers pinning the new deputy or police officer. In one case the father and two brothers, all from different depts., were present for the pinning of the new graduate. It was pretty impressive and especially so since in that case, the father was from my former dept.

                          Congratulations Ernie.

Thanks!!! If I had to choose I'd say WVDC, more personnel to learn from and to keep his learning curve busy. But, inall honesty, I'm confident he'll do fine where ever he goes.

I was lucky enough to attend my nephew's graduation from the academy -- having family present is one of the most emotional things I saw -- and well worth the wait

I hope you get to pass your badge onto your son -- that would make a great photo op!
