I asked my local sherrif this question during my ccw interview. How would he prefer this go during a traffic stop. His answer was simple, why muck up a simple traffic stop? If one of my deputies pulls you over he is more interested in finding out if your a felon or a drug dealer than actually ticketing you for your california stop. You clearly aren't any of these, so if your gun is truely concealed, please DON'T even mention it. My deputy will complete his 10 minute stop and you both will be on your way.
I'm ready for this craziness to be over...

Considering your local sheriff probably hasn't done a traffic stop in a while, might be better to follow the advice of the line officers/deputies who responded to the OP and inform whoever pulled you over. The few times I've been pulled over, I simply said, "I'm an off duty officer and have a weapon on me," while keeping my hands on the wheel. I then follow any instructions given. Some derivative of that can be used for CCW. No need to get all crazy with the, "Pursuant to my CCW..." etc.

The requirement to inform the officer depends upon your issuing authority. Kern County states as a condition of issuing an LTC that you must inform the officer immediately upon any interaction with a LEO. It is not printed on the license so there might be some wiggle room about the legaility of this but remember that maintaining your license is at the whim of the issuing authority so it is best to follow that guideline if you want to keep your license.

While not required to inform here in Sac County, it still might not be a bad idea to do so wherever you are. I was recently pulled over by Citrus Heights PD for a tail light being out. I kept my hands where he could see them, informed him that I was CCW at the time, and asked for instructions. He was unaware that the Sheriff was issuing for "Self Defense" and it kind of blew his mind that I was just a regular citizen. Anyway, his words were, "Well, if the sheriff issued you a permit, you're probably not a felon... get that light fixed for me." and he was on his way.

California is a NO TELL state. You are not required to tell an LEO that you are carrying a firearm. A few Counties such as Kern County require you to tell ANY LEO that you come into contact with. That is illegal, but it has not been challenged. I wouldn't recommend becoming the test case. Allow the CalGuns Foundation to clean that up. Kern I am sure is on the back burner though, as they are virtually shall issue.

If it is a normal traffic stop, I would NOT even consider telling an LEO about it. That is going to get the officer calling for backup and possibly having a gun pointed at you in any populated area in the state.

Having your wrist/hands on the top of the wheel, vehicle off and no quick movements is sound advice for any traffic stop.

              I am not an LEO.

Thanks Andrew, I was starting to feel like I was Mis-informed.. I left my interview feeling like The Sheriff had a good point and that I would keep it concealed and my mouth shut should the situation arise. After reading this I was starting to doubt myself. I agree with your opinions.

Thank you. Just remember, we have the 5th Amendment. Someone posted a video a few months back (I think on here), of a dash cam from an LEO outside of CA. The person said they had a CCW, and the cop ran back to his car, grabbed a rifle and called for back up. Within 4 minutes, 6 or 7 other LEO's were onscene, all coming code 3, and pointed their guns at the poor guy.
I am not saying, by any means, that that is the norm, or that would happen.... but people forget just how anti gun our state is.

I guess you would know how LEO's in CA would respond, what with all your experience doing traffic stops. Do you even have a CCW, and thus, experience being pulled over by officers with it?

yawn..... I remember why i stay out of this section of the forum....

I must have zero knowledge of anything going on, as far as CCW's...right?

Since you clearly didn't read the last sentence of what I wrote, please allow me to quote it for you.

I am not an LEO, but it is clear that you guys are with the biased insults. My answers are based on my personal experience with Sheriff's thru out the state, more specifically, about CCW's on first hand accounts. I wouldn't tell a cop if I had a CCW, why would I announce it on a forum, which I use my real name on?

More specifically, the point I was trying to get across, before I was insulted, is many LEO's in this state do not understand why civilians need firearms. Nowhere in that quote, did I specify that all or even most of the LEO's in this state, would act like that.

Now tell me gentlemen, am i incorrect in that statement in bold?

I am incorrect when I stated it may cause unwanted attention?

Maybe you guys feel that the Constitution and the right to remain silent isn't relevant, if a Non LEO gets the Sheriffs permission, to carry a concealed firearm, right?

Ultimately it depends on what form of automatic database crosschecking happens.

I don't see how asking for someone's qualifications or experience on a matter is an insult. If your only experience on the matter is anecdotal, negative stories (because the many positive experiences aren't news worthy), then I would hardly consider you an expert.

And NO ONE stated or implied in this discussion that LEOs have a problem with someone having a CCW, or with "civilians having firearms." That's you showing your bias.

Well I will agree that usually only the negative situations get attention, it is not where my opinion was formed from. I am sure there are plenty of CCW issues where people have been pulled over up and down our beautiful state, just as I know there have been many negative ones.
Showing my bias against LEO's? I don't see how. I was asking a question, just as you did with my qualifications.
