    ccw traffic stop

when making a traffic stop on a person that has a ccw, does that info appear on your computer prior to walking up and contacting the driver ?

i have always thought that placing both hands on the steering wheel, and stating "ccw" when i have a weapon, on initial contact, would be appreciated by the officer.....??

Non Leo: (Civlian personnel) Ive been on traffic stops where the person pulled over was an off duty LEO and the first words out of there mouth are usually something along the lines of "I have a loaded weapon, Im an off duty cop" they usually dont move much from hands on the steering wheel until we verify ID/Badge. Not exactly a normal CCW, but could be what you would want to do.

      This is sound advice.

Why nOT just have your DL and CCW in your hands when he walks up (hands on wheel) and hand it to him when he gets there? That's what I do (with creds) when I'm in CA.

Sometimes it is not a good idea to be reaching around while the officer approaches. That always made me uneasy.......just sayin'

I always say "In accordance with my CCW permit, I have to inform you that I am licensed to carry a concealed weapon and am doing so, at this time. How would you like me to proceed?"

I don't like to open with "I am armed" or I have a concealed weapon" first as the cop may react before I get the statement out that I have a permit. I don't say "I am armed" or "I have a concealed weapon" first so that there is no misunderstanding.

The advice on not reaching for your license prior to the officer contacting you is good. Wait until the officer approaches you and tell him "hey, I have a CCW and I'm carrying a gun, it's located (insert location), how would you like to handle this?" that's usually all it takes. You won't get proned out or have your car searched. If it's me, prepare to get engaged in some gun talk and a verbal warning for your traffic violation.

Sounds, well, sound to me. Should I ever attain LTC, I'll remember this.

I've found as long as you aren't twitchy or a grovelling slave, traffic stops go pretty smoothly.

This is how I did traffic stops...

Being a CCW is issued by a county and not the state it is not linked with DMV records. That's why if you have a CCW part of the requirement is to state you have when when contacted by an LEO.

As more and more records go paperless and are able to be linked I see this being an eventuality. However, IMO it is probably 10-15 years out knowing government.
