We barely use them... Clear text as they now call it.

The FIRST 35?? I'm glad we don't use them.

Using them really is the best way to remember them.

I was a huge fan of flash cards, also listen to your radio/scanner if available. I remember a few tricky ones that, if taken out of context, were hard to remember. Good luck!

i should add, put a hole punch through them and attach them all to a metal clip. Mix them up because it is too easy to memorize them all in order. The tests may be given by definition or actual code so memorize them in both directions.

FYI, 35 codes is the tip of the iceberg, so get a good head start on meaningful study habits. Penal codes, vehicle codes, elements, etc.. although you don't necessarily have to memorize everything, the more info you can retain without referring to books and cheaters the better and faster you will be at your job (especially on training!!)

Luckily the Sr. TAC Officer told us that we dont have to memorize all at once. We have a few months. I figure memorize 10 per week and I should be good after week number 9.

The scanner is a good idea, I occasionally listen to CHP on my Police Radio app on my IPhone. The app has a list of all up to date 10 codes that you can reference while you listen. Unfortunately, CHP doesn't use every single code so you'll pick up traffic quickly, and if you listen to major PDs like LA or San Jose then they either don't talk much or don't cover much since the online feed only catches 1 or 2 channels.

If you don't feel like any of this, flash cards seem good too. I might actually start doing that to get them learned a bit quicker.

In my Urban Search and Rescue volunteer training, we've been taught to avoid them as FEMA is pushing responders hard to just use plain language. Too much differences between 10-codes between agencies.

I'm currently 10-100. If you use flashcards you should have them memorized in one day. When I had to learn phonetics I would just call out plates while driving.

I used to just put my head on the code book and absorb the codes by osmosis. Really not that hard.

I've been gone from the street since 1997 and didn't have any need for them at the jail afterward, but after looking at the url that Tacit Blue gave, I found I can still recall some of them.lol
