owning guns before applying for LEO

I figured that, I just didn't think people applying for a LEO would have anything illegal.

But seriously.... you'd be amazed. The candidate who, during the interview, admitted felony controlled substance use and possession in his car right before walking in for the oral board is best one I've heard of many. Seen others myself when screening candidates.

As I said in another thread, agencies each have their own ideas of who / what it is they are looking for in a candidate. If the agency is that anal that they would DQ someone for lawfully owning a firearm, I quite simply wouldn't ever want to work there. It was never a question that I had to answer way back when I was trying to get hired. Now, sadly, it apparently is in some cases.

I'm taking the entrance test for SDSO in a couple of weeks. I own >20 firearms at present, and I'd never even given any thought to whether that would have any impact on my application.

I heard from someone that it is frowned upon to own a handgun when applying for a Law Enforcement job. Is this true?

What about bolt action rifles or shotguns?

I would like to avoid any unnecessary conflict if possible. Thanks.

I have a oral interview at the end of this month so wanted to make sure I was ready for it.

When I took the oral boards for Border Patrol, the agents never even delved into my personal firearms ownership, and the question never came up on any of the tests or application forms.

Neither did it 20 odd years ago when I tested for SD Marshall's office. Besides, especially in the post-Heller and post McDonald USA, what department would want to take the slightest risk of a civil rights lawsuit for discriminatory hiring practices?

The Santa Clara SO questionnaire asked how many handguns and "assault weapons" do you own. Found thay odd.

The bitter clingers must be identified and weeded out as early as possible. What if some of them turn out to be less than entirely hostile to the constitution?

I've worked for three LE agencies over the past 12 years in the liberal SF Bay Area. None of them gave a hoot about how many firearms I legally owned prior to getting hired.

In fact, the BI at my second agency was also a "gun nut" and he personally owned over twice as many firearms as I did!

Gun info by itself really means nothing. I used to use the DROS information to make sure the Personal History Statement information was consistent and correct.

My old agency interviewed (oral board) a guy who got out of prison for armed robbery!! He applied and the human resources individual said we had to continue the interview because we didn't "know" he was in fact a felon.

Anyways.....don't worry about it.

I was asked by two different departments about why I felt the "need" to own so many guns. I explained that I collect. I didn't get hired by either one. Not that it hurt my feelings much.

I was offered jobs by a few other departments who never asked about my gun ownership.

Also, I was told by multiple LEOs not to buy a gun because Police Academies prefer candidates that never fired one. When I bet most of the LE calgunners have in the past.

The academy didn't really care. They were happy that they had shooters who knew what they were doing. We had total clueless idiots who shot up the dirt 10 feet in front of them very well and caused all sorts of ricochet problems. Those guys were not liked by the instructors.

Our range master was really cool and he's old school. When our schedule opened up a bit and he saw that he had some free time to play, he told us to bring our own guns on those nights when there was nothing planned on the schedule so we can play on the academy range.

We had some crazy dudes, I tell ya what... I brought out my AR's, one guy brought his 50AE Desert Eagle, a lot of shotguns, etc. We had a blast. I still have the pic of me shooting the 50AE DE. Good times.

lol awesome. I figured they would because being comfortable and knowing the safety procedures are the most important things when it comes to handling firearms.
