owning guns before applying for LEO

I had a quick question.

I heard from someone that it is frowned upon to own a handgun when applying for a Law Enforcement job. Is this true?

What about bolt action rifles or shotguns?

I would like to avoid any unnecessary conflict if possible. Thanks.

I have a oral interview at the end of this month so wanted to make sure I was ready for it.

Should not be an issue. Just know the rules, in case you get asked.

It wasn't that long ago when most potential LEOs and almost everyone else grew up owning firearms. It's a shame that just a generation or two later, this question has to be asked. It's sure a sad commentary on today's society.

If it was up to me, I'd stay away from hiring anyone who DIDN'T own a gun previously. Too many LEOs end up scared of their own gun and can't handle or use it safely and effectively.

They are trying to make sure you are not committing any undetected felonies.

Every question under the sun is asked during backgrounds and the psychological test. They ask you if you love your parents as well. Try not to read too much into it they are just checking for specific mental profiles.

Plenty of the recruits that actually get hired have never touched much less fired a handgun.

Wasn't a problem at my agency.

If it is a problem with an agency you applied for, do you really want to work for them?

I actually had guns and an out of state Utah CCW and they asked me to write why I had/ felt I needed one.

Got hired though (LAPD) so I don't think it was too much of a problem.
