Hi I'm planning on buying a Ruger 556 from my local outdoorsman.

I'm currently 18 and attend college. Don't have the need for a car at the moment so I ride a bicycle. I'm wondering if it's legal to carry the AR on my back (unloaded) with the magazines on another part of my body. I plan on going to the range/etc with my bike. I'll also be sure to stay out of school zones.

Also I believe that when I buy the AR it will include a soft case. Should I keep it in the case slinged around my back or get a sling for the rifle itself, if it matters.

Any input is much appreciated thank you.

If you don't think police respond to man with a gun calls, about a year ago University of Calfiornia Irvine was partially shut down because a man with a gun was reported near student housing. It turned out to be a guy with a paint ball gun walking to or from a range.

Carry your long gun in a guitar case or backpack.

And study up on California Gun Laws.

I use to visit the range all the time using a backpack. Pull the pins on the AR, break it into two pieces and store them. I used a hiking backpack since it was deep enough to not in-print the upper. It's also handy for carrying ammo and cleaning equipment. I think Walmart is currently selling hiking backpacks in the sporting goods section that should cheaply work.

You are going "to or from hunting or shooting" besides a civilian is less likely to freak.

please please please dont ride a bike with a sig 556 on your back. I would bet a lot of money that some LEOs will show up and you will be detained. furthermore, you would scare the hell out of every community member you passed, and you would make a great target for a criminal. Break it down and put it in a backpack.

Think about it for a second. You want to sling an AR to your back and ride your bicycle out on the street? Does any of that sound like it's a good idea to you? Just because it's legal to do doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's legal for an 80 yr old man to have sex with an 18 yr old girl who's still in highschool.... does that mean it's a good idea? I'm sure many people would frown upon it, same situation with you open carrying on a bicycle.

You will be drawing a LOT of negative attention to yourself. And if you're contacted by the police they will probably prone you out. I don't know how many officers would casually walk up to a guy with an AR.

I don't understand why you don't want to put it in a rifle case, or as others have suggested, a guitar case or break it apart and put it in a backpack... much more inconspicuous.

I started q thread about this very subject a couple years ago. Yes I have carried a rifle while on my bike plenty of times. Just keep it in a case and you'll be fine as long as you know the law and can convey that during any possible LEO interaction.
