    Overtime and budget cut

Having a bigger paycheck is good but I have no time with my family or my woman. I usually work 16-24 hours of OT each month. How is your department dealing with the budget cut and overtime shift? How much overtime do you work per pay period?

They say don't work overtime... But I have been averaging about 10hrs a week this year, plus all the holiday pay, and OT pay on holiday.

They place the time into a bank and then give us forced time off when the bank gets too large.

Last year I worked about 15-20 OT hours a month but we are in such bad shape this year that any OT that has to be covered by us is not authorized (minus OT that is occured during a major incident of some sorts). The only OT I see us getting this is year would be for DUI stuff which we get remeburshed for. VSET was a good source of OT for me but that program is dead now.

We are doing in service training for range and DT also to cut out overtime.

We have no OT authorized except for Court and maybe the occassional special HOLIDAY patrol detail.

I haven't seen OT in about eight years. What extra assignments we get have to be taken in CTO. I work for a county investigative unit, no call outs, no "high priority" cases. The trade off is that my normal compensation is great, I work 4-10s w/S-S-M off, off on holidays and have a take home car. Never missed a single baseball/soccer/softball game for my kids and now that they are playing college sports I can take off anytime I want...easy trade off...

My old agency went to bed with the FBI and got them to fund some of our overtime. It was sweet. We worked very well with them and they were very happy with us. I retired and now I understand the FBI has put a halt on the OT! It has put a sting in more than a few folks budget! Them days are gone now.

From an upper management view its cheaper to pay OT than CTO.

I wish I didn't have to do anymore... I spend more time at work and on the road than I do at home or sleep... and when I am at home, I sleep... this sucks!

You guys with your 10's and 12's...

I wish I could have 4 10's... But having 5 8's we definitely are more forgiving with the OT.

But then again, we only have 8 sworn. And its usually only ONE person getting the OT.

Like right now. Once again I am working alone.

My wife is CA State safety and gets so much overtime I usually only see her about 3 days a week. Lots of $ but no wife. They pay $, not comp time. She can retire in 1 1/2 years (30 years in). Wonder what it will be like to have a wife around?

Before our county EMS Agency came up with laws regarding how many shifts we could work back to back, I once worked 14, 24 hour shifts back to back as a paramedic. When I finally got off the 14th, 24 shift, I was walking crooked like I was intoxicated.

There is surely a balance to think about regarding OT. When we are young, the money seems to outweigh the time at work. As we age, for me anyway, I cherished my time off more than extra $ in the bank account.

We don't have any overtime, except when I respond to a crime scene during off business hours or weekends, or held over at the court for testimony.

I work at a court one day a week to cut their division overtime. I am losing my office hours for my work assignments. The only positive thing about working at the court is, it is only 5 miles from my house, instead 45 miles I have to drive to my office.
