I clean mine at least once a week because I shoot it once a week. Cleaning also depends on the weather and how many times the gun and I hit the ground. The level of cleaning varies, I always wipe the gun down and oil it but may not do a deep cleaning every time.

I carry a Sig P226 in .40 because it was issued to me. Do I like it? Sure. Have I had to carry other guns I did'nt like? Sure. Would I pick this pistol/caliber if I had a choice? No. Do I shoot the gun in a recreational setting to become more proficient with it? Absolutely. Is it a good pistol/caliber? Absolutely, just not my personal preference.

Really like my g21. Clean it after every use and otherwise de-dust it weekly after patrol/off duty. I have the opportunity to work an off road patrol using atvs and that leaves all your gear dirty so I need to clean after that as well.

Clean it when it needs to be cleaned. Hate my service weapon, a Sig-Sauer 229 DAK. It is the WORST gun I was ever issued, IMO worse than the Berreta 96D Brigadeers I was first issued. At least I could shoot that gun well and put everything in the 5 ring. I miss my Glock 19, though. We were together since 2002, and kills me that my agency went from a perfect gun to be on surveillance and plain clothes to that piece of sh*t. I do clean my Glock 26 often because it is the only gun I will carry now. The 229 I only carry at the range!

I clean my guns regardless of whether it's duty use or not.... every time after I shoot it.

I check my pistol every shift, to make sure there are no dust-bunnies, etc. I carry a G21SF that I purchased. I clean it after I shoot it. I shoot it off duty and carry a G19 off-duty. Both require minimal maintenance. We have a policy that allows officers to purchase and carry most popular pistols from Beretta, Glock, SIG, HK, S&W and selected 1911s with Rangemaster approval. We issue HK USP 45 ACP pistols. I do not care for the USP system, although it is very reliable.

I check it every couple of weeks and lubricate as needed. I carry it 24/7 and shoot it whenever I can, on duty qualification and for recreation. It looks pretty ragged, but it is a good shooter. I am trained as a factory armorer, and can take a good care of my guns. So, my guns being a raggedy old guns doesn't necessary mean a bad thing.

I'm retired, but I always carried a fired gun. After a range session it was cleaned and then test fired for one magazine. This was with my 1911, M-4, HK-53, or MP-5.

Between range sessions I would wipe it down if I was in wet weather. Thats about it.

I am cleaning mine once a week (or more depending if I shoot more than once a week.)

I am not a fan of glocks and don't shoot them for recreation.

I inspect/wipe down/lube every week. I clean it a few times a year regardless and each time I fire it.


I was issued a Beretta 92FS 9mm. I thought the gun was "OK", but not great prior to being hired. I've come to really respect the pistol and I feel it is a very solid design. I would in no way feel under-armed if mandated to use the pistol.

Prior to going to patrol I carried an optional S&W 4506 .45 for a while and liked it. I switched to the HK USP for a couple years and was very happy. When I went to patrol I went back to the Beretta. After training I tried the USP but it didn't feel "right" any more so I stayed with Beretta, carrying a 92FS Vertec Inox with Trijicon night sights, CTC grips, and a Surefire X200. At the end of 2008 I switched to Sig, carrying a P220 for a few months before my current pistol, a Sig P226R, which I started carrying in early 2009. It currently has an Insight WX150 light and I carry it in a Safariland 6360. I love the pistol, light, and holster, and I really want to pick up some CTC grips for it. At the same time, if they told me I had to start carrying the Beretta again, I'd be OK with it. Practically they're both great guns and I think the advantages are more preference than objective. I owned Sig and Beretta pistols prior to being hired so I think I'd definitely shoot them recreationally as well.

When hired, do you guys get issued "used" weapons or "new"? Do the agencies save $$$ like the Military or buy each new officer a new sidearm?
