Did this come from a reliable source? Has anyone actually confirmed it? I've seen similar internet lore before. I want to know it's real before I pass it on to a few family members. Since it is plausible and something good to keep in mind, I might still pass it on to friends and family with an additional stetement about not being able to comfirm the story.

It is very reliable. I can confirm the OP's info regarding the officer safety bulletin coming out of Whittier PD.

Whats even worse is agencies like mine are so small we dont have secure parking.

Any dirt bag could walk up and screw with our cars. One guy before me had sugar dumped in his tank.

Watch your tails out there guys. Its been a scary last few months.

Yup. I shake my head whenever I see a KMA or similiar plate frame....

wow,I want to be a cop too. I am planning to get hired in SF or Sac, far away from where I live or my friends/family for my own safety and others.

Why would you put a sticker letting people know that you are a cop?
Last time I checked many people don't like cops.

My buddy works in a place without secure parking... even for the units... he found some dudes casing the units and trying to take the shotguns out of them one night, other officers have had their POV's vandalized... fun times.

We got a metal gate to our lot but you can see inside anyway and pop off rounds at us if you want. Also, our walls are not that high and there are some generators and stuff on the outside that you can climb on easily and jump over if you really wanted to get in.

Whenever I see those KMA/KJC plate frames... I pretty much can figure out they can't be real cops. Real cops don't need those things. We send in the DMV Confidentiality form and it's taken care of. Cops do run plates when they do a traffic stop... unless you are CHP... I've had some experience with them not running the plate when they stopped me.

In any event, it was stressed from day one in the academy, "DON'T FLY YOUR COLORS!" unless you want to be involved in something involuntarily. When I am off, I am off... nothing that says cop anywhere and I sure as all heck don't dress or look like one either. No 5.11 pants, police themed tee shirts, GLOCK baseball cap, nothing!

1/2 hour commute? That's about 10 miles if you work day shift in my area. 10 miles isn't far enough.

I work in a different county and nobody, I mean NOBODY, sees me off duty unless I make it a point to see them.

My neighbor's son is a cop and lately, he's been here more and more frequently and staying over a lot. That's okay by me. He seems to work opposite schedule from me so he's here when I leave for work and gone when I come back. It works out well.

I am in the same boat, except both counties are fairly small. I run into people off duty. Always have my head on a swivel.

                                Everyone,

Thanks for the comfirmation! I'm alway suspect of e-mails which are making the rounds. I will pass this on to my friends and family and hope that it makes the rounds in the retired LEO comunity who don't get all the new official notices but may have stickers on their vehicles.
