Has anyone heard about this story yet? I just got an email about it a few days ago. Here is the short version of the story.

Three gang members were arrested for a residential burglary in Whittier. The burglary was interrupted by the victim, an off duty LAPD officer. When asked how they identified officers, he stated they look for stickers that indicate any type of law enforcement affiliations on personally owned vehicles. He also indicated that they look for "KMA" license plate frames. The suspect stated that they target LEOs homes because they know they will find gun.

KMA license plates are asking for trouble. I don't put them, any work related or gun related stickers on my car either. NRA stickers advertise gun owner.

That happened. I recall the gang was based in Compton. They also surveyed the officer before they determined to go in.
Good reason not to broadcast certain things.

Personally, I don't have any LEO specific things on my vehicle, just my Veteran plates. No one in my apartment knows (that I'm aware of) that I'm a cop.
I don't leave in uniform, and when I bring my uniforms home to wash I put them in my duty bag and my duty bag just has my name tape and a unit patch from when I was active duty.

Most probably know I'm in the Army because I leave my apartment in uniform once a month but that doesn't worry me.

There was a guy parked near PDs and following officers home in my area. He broke into a several homes and took a lot of weapons.

Blend in with the crowd. "Walk softly and carry a big stick."
Different routes home and checking your mirrors will help out. I know it sounds a little paranoid but its necessary in the profession.

But on a serious note a dirtbag broke into one of our officer's homes. After some investigating (no luck getting the perp) we were able to determine this officer was being cased. Biggest mistake is he lives in town, works dayshift and has/had Code 7 at his 10-42.

Where I live, if you have a LEO type sticker or a Republican sticker your car WILL get vandalized.

KMA? ... Yup, you can tell who the loosers are. Seriously, how pathetic of a cop are you when you've got your KMA license plate cover. I see them all the time on the highway and just shake my head.

The above posters are right, if you're a cop you don't need to advertise it unless you're a looser or wanna be.

Yep, our SGT talked about it in briefing yesterday. If some gangster followed me home, he would have a long drive into the mountains, it would be the first time he ever saw a deer, he would all of a sudden realize there are a majority of Conservative hunters in the area, and would soon find himself being attacked by Pit Bulls the minute he steps onto my property. If he gets past the Pit bUlls, then he is really in trouble, because he has just entered a fortified fobidden zone and would suffer great traumatic injury!

It is worth it to live at least 1/2 hour commute (one way) from work!

The KMA type license plate frames are a bad ideal. Sadly a lot of non-sworn employees think they are a good ideal. Take the time to educate them.

KMA refers to radio frequency...

Ah. I was thinking it was an acronym and not the FCC ID for LAPD. I did see the KMA367 and KMA628, but thought it would be some cool TLA I had not heard. Oh well. Thanks for answering.

From what I know, a lot of people who have KMA/KJC type plate frames are actually relatives or friends of a police officer or as somebody mentioned a non-sworn employee. They put it on thinking they won't get pulled over. I once saw a lady talking on her cell phone while driving solo on the carpool lane... with a KMA plate frame on her car. Ridiculous...

Originally KMA stood for "kiss my ***" followed by their badge number and was used by those officers that had reached retirement age and were still working. It signified that the officer didn't care and could just put in their retirement papers anytime they felt like it and receive their pension, thus "KMA".
