I say glock 17...cheap, and so is ammo! The academy cost me about 5k all expenses included (Gas, food, uni's etc.). Self-Sponsored.

Gen 3. What Academy you going through? Check with your academy about a caliber size because you may have to pay extra $$$ if you use something other than 9mm.

We used Glock 17s at Sierra College Police Academy.

Most LE agencies in the Sac Area use the SIG P226 in .40 or 9mm

Get what fits in your hand. Stay away from springfield, they have a high bore axis and the recoil has a snap to it even in 9mm.They feel good in the hand but the slide sits so high its awkward.
Glocks are simple and reliable. I have a Gen 3 Glock 19. Smith and Wesson M&P feels good in the hand haven't shot one yet. Sigs are great just expensive, have shot them. Accurate and comfortable.

I have found this to be the complete opposite. Like he, said get what fits good in your hand, but don't rule out the XD because the bore axis is slightly higher. My XD, 3.8 has been the eaiest weapon for me to manipulate is such a short amount of time. I shoot a usp40 twice as much, but I suck with it... Same with the glock... Any glock.

I have a review of my xdm 3.8 in the handgun section. I have about the same group size at 20 yards with the xdm, as I do with the usp40 in half the distance.

This of course, is MY expereince. EVERYONE will be different.

Go out and shoot as many weapons as you can so you can see what you like, but don't rule a weapon out because someone else doesn't like the design or technical aspects of it... Unless its something like a high point... Which I'm sure they wouldn't let you shoot it there anyways.

Have to echo what Fullrearview says about Springfield. I ended up with the XD40 because no Glock gun fit or shot as well in my hand. Each person has to decide what works for them and what is in their price range. For me the XD40 fit both criteria.

Glock 34 9mm. Current duty weapon for the last 2 years.

Started with a Glock 23 40SW. Issued a Glock 22 40SW upon assignment. Went to a Glock 21 45ACP by choice. Now back to the 9mm to complete the circle of life.

The Napa Valley College Academy currently uses a Smith & Wesson M&P .40S&W. BTW, you probably will not start firearms until March 2012 if you are enrolling in the September 2011 class. You have plenty of time to think it over.

They were in the process of buying them when I graduated (Class 74 2009 Baby!)

The agency where I am now is making the transition from the G22 to the M&P40. Almost every guy in the department shoots better with the M&P.
