    Poll: Duty Weapon Brand/Caliber

What is your duty weapon and caliber. Just wondering. Starting the academy in September and wondering which weapon to buy.

    Thanks.

Yeah... But I still need one. It's a non-affiliated academy.

A Glock is a good Academy gun. Go full size, G17, G22 or G21.

I used to know few self-sponsor academy guys about 4 years ago and they all bought nice H&K and SIG pistols for themselves. At the end, only one got hire I believe and he could not use his H&K USP 45 he bought. He had to use issue weapon and that was Glock 40cal I believe. Just like 1911su16b870 said earlier ^^ you should buy a Glock full size or compact because most departments will let you use Glock for sure.

Self sponsored academy where you have to buy your own gun? I'd go with glock 17 in 9mm. You'll be spending enough money on other things, so you may as well go cheap on your training tool.

If Glocks don't blow up your skirt there is always Smith and Wesson M&P. They are priced comparably to Glocks. Also consider that no matter what you buy it may not be right for your future PD. You could buy a Glock and the PD could have a policy that you can have anything you want as long as it is a Sig. Or you may buy a 9 and they only want .40.

I put myself through with a G17 and it became my house gun for the longest time.

If you plan to work for an agency near Sacramento, be advised that some do not allow Glocks for duty carry. Most of the agencies local to you will issue the gun when you get hired on, so it may not be a huge issue if you buy the Glock for the academy. Just something to be aware of.

If you're paying your own way through with money probably being tight enough, and the ergonomics of a Glock work for you, then I'd concur with a G17. Simple, rugged and it'll get you through the course with a minimum of fuss. I say a G17 also for caliber... 9mm is going to be cheapest to shoot, when you aren't shooting academy ammo. Once you hire on, many / most agencies are going to issue you their gun anyway.

I'd suggest, if you haven't thought of it already, to visit a range where you can rent. Get the feel of the Glock before you purchase and make sure it works for you. Some people (yours truly) don't do as well with them as with other makes. If the Glock doesn't work for you, then try the M&P. Between the two of them, you should find a match for you.

I appreciate all the feedback. I am aware that my dept will issue me one, and that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make to start my career. But I'm also an enthusiast and having guns that I eventually can't use on duty doesn't bother me.

For the Glock people. What generation are you guys using?

Gen 3. What Academy you going through? Check with your academy about a caliber size because you may have to pay extra $$$ if you use something other than 9mm.
