    Double Standard ? Dept wrong?

So I watched a video, and I disagree with what the Department did to the deputy. What is your take on this. Yes It could have been handled a little differently but it didnt warrant termination. I could be wrong.
Mind you the girl assaulted the bus driver and would not cooperate.

I wonder if they already were after him for something else and they just used this as the excuse? It didn't seem too excessive to me. If you are going to hit school employees and not cooperate, the officer shouldn't assume she isn't going to hit him.

At the same time, maybe he could have tried some wrist control and treated her just a bit softer. You know how people are when you go throwing girls around. Personally, I don't think women should be treated any different than men, but that is the public perception.

And in the end, the video did him in.

The other thing to remember is that she is only 17, so technically still a minor.

I don't see it as being "excessive" myself? Granted the LEO looked to be a bit annoyed from the start, but IMO more kids with the attitude of "I don't have to do anything I don't want to" need to be put into reality like this.
If my daughter had done what this girl is accused of and an officer had treated her this way.....I'd shake his hand and thank him!

The video looks bad but then again all use of forces tend to look bad on video. Stupid media bleeped out what was being said which is extremely lame. How somebody responds to your verbal commands is an indicator to their intentions; by removing the statements the use of force looks even worse.

That was not bad at all, yeah she was seventeen and maybe the Officer was not in the mood to deal with a spoiled brat, but he did not punch her or use excessive force. Fired for that seems odd maybe there were problems between the Officer and the Department?

If technical is what you want, in CA, age 17 means she is a juvenile, not a minor. In CA, minor means 18 or older, but not 21.

Family Code Sec 6500 defines a minor as "...an individual who is under 18 years of age. The period of minority is calculated from the first minute of the day on
which the individual is born to the same minute of the corresponding day completing the period of minority."

IMO another instance where LEOs' hands are tied behind their backs.

Why is it that the media and some of the public criticize the LEO involved in situations where force was used? Are they under the impression that these are cases where the LEO can just say "Awe C'mon, pleeeeease cooperate? I'll be your friend"? This may sound somewhat extreme but, it might not hurt to make the public school system a little more militaristic in the chain of command sense. If kids are taught from a young age to identify and respect authority and not get combative with them, maybe the LEO's wouldn't be put in the position to use force. I find it hard to feel sorry for people who are surprised to get the horns when they mess with the bull.

Regardless of what she said to the officer and how she wasn't cooperating, the officer did not have too grab her and pin her down like that, especially that rough. Seriously guys a smart mouth little **** spoiled girl regardless doesn't need to be taken down like someone who is being threatening??? If someone came to my business and was a smart ***, who wouldn't shut there mouth and wouldn't get out of my shop, could I have just throw them over and pin them down and retrain them? That was abuse of power and trust me that was a small sample of abuse of power. Let alone a 17 year old girl. At the same time, I hate the attitude kids have now a days, they seem like they think they know everything and do not respect authority. Just my 2 cents.

And I whole heartedly disagree with you about the force not being needed with this kid. You said it yourself that kids have big attitudes these days. I wouldn't make it that general myself, but I would agree a lot of kids think they can get away with whatever they want when it comes to attitudes.
I also believe this has a LOT to do with the general permiations in society today about not spanking kids when they need it as well as not raising kids to "harshly" and giving them more freedom.

That being said, I still say that it would appear this officer was in no mood for a bratty little kid trying to throw her ill perceived weight around. And technically he may have used undue force to take care of her. But IMO that's in the eyes of the overly PC America in general rather than good old common sense.

As I said earlier, if that was my child I would've asked to shake the officers hand and thank him!
I remember having a teacher smack me in class once when I was around 12, and my Mom brought me back to the school the next day so she could thank the teacher in front of all my friends. I remember not ever getting out of line for the rest of that school year!

Granted, you're going to have problem kids due to mental issues or simply making very poor choices in life. But for the large part, parents need to quit living by Dr. Spocks misbegotten parenting advice and dicipline their children and teach them right from wrong sternly when needed.

Apples and oranges. From reading the article the victim of the original assault appears to be a teachers aide, that makes the assault by the student a felony, depneding on the aides actual status. The differance in your scenario and the deputy is that he is effecting an arrest that the kid must submit to or be forced to comply with. A person is not required to submit to a private person or citizen's arrest but they are required to submit to an officers arrest.

Without being there it is very difficult to say if the force he used was excesive but moving a suspect from point a to point b in the face of resistance is not in and of itself excessive if she was not cooperating. That a person is no longer free to come and go as they please is part of the definition of arrest

There must be something more to this, firing seems a little extreme just on the face of it.

I agree, kids need a beating every now and then, and yeah she was asking for it... All the officer had to do is get her up grab her arms and hand cuff her. She posed no threat to the officer to get tossed around like an inmate, you got to remember she is a little **** girl with an attitude doesn't make her a threat to an officer just for being a smart *** (even though she assaulted a bus driver). And again yeah she probably deserved it in a lot of our minds, but if you give everyone the authority to toss around little kids and justify it, what would that make us? If it was justified, why was the officer fired? Seriously guys.

I see you're a bit conflicted as to her deserving to be treated as a criminal. Yet in the next breath you say she didn't deserve to be treated as a criminal????

To me this speaks to the way society has been conditioned through PCism.
You say she's a "little girl" with an attitude that assaulted the bus driver, but you don't think she should be treated like a criminal?
If this was your dauther how would you like to see the officers and courts treat her? With kid gloves and a slap on the wrist with nothing more than a "Please don't do this again" request? Because if she was my daughter I'd want her to jump into the scared straight program. Matter of fact I'm pretty sure she'd rather have someone else punish her instead of dealing with my wrath!

As to why the officer was fired......Do you really have to ask?
Again I'll point to society's permiation of PCism combined with the non stop will of people to sue for anything and everything. Which in turn forces the PD to fire this officer in order to try and avoid lawsuits brought about only to make lawers and lazy parents rich.
