Really? Under the "Education" part on your application, do you think they would just take your words for it without any proofs? So what is the whole point of the background investigation?Comment

Did you even bother to read what I said?
This is in regards to the TO packet, which I was responding to.
If you are trying for Grade 7 pay, which requires a Bachelors Degree, then you are required to furnish transcripts.
If you do not yet have a Bachelors Degree, then you can only qualify for Grade 5 pay, and college transcripts are not required.
I've already been through this process and currently am in backgrounds for them so please don't try to argue with me.
Thank you.Comment

A bachelors degree alone will only qualify you for GL-5. In order to make GL-7 on education grounds, you either need an additional year of graduate study in law, criminal justice, or similar... or you need what they call Superior Academic Achievement, which is basically a major GPA over 3.5. That's why they need your transcript if you're qualifying for GL-7... they need to analyze your GPA.

Understood, but what I'm trying to say is that if you don't even have a bachelors degree, or not even applying for GL-7 which requires bachelors+, you are not required to submit transcripts along with the TO packet. A highschool diploma will qualify you for GL-5.A bachelors degree alone will only qualify you for GL-5. Right now the process is averaging 2+ years from the date you test until the date you start the academy. There are currently roughly 2500 applicants in the waiting pool that have passed every phase of the testing process that are cleared and just waiting for an academy date. You absolutely must be patient at this point if you want to be hired by the Border Patrol because you are in for a long wait.
Check out the forums on www.honorfirst.com for a ton of info on the hiring process. They also have a hiring list which shows every forum members TSU date (date that they cleared everything).Comment

2+ years wow, that is some serious waiting time. I think I might be able to get CPA license or so. I will definitely have my accounting degree by than for sure.
Good luck on your upcoming test EvidensComment

There are quite a few people that started as GS-7 without any degrees. Any college education will most likely be verified and one way of doing that is through transcripts.Did you even bother to read what I said?

You're in the process only. Your foot hasn't even touched water yet but you seem to know all . And even , if even you'll make it you would still be at most a GS-7 . Don't forget that. So don't argue with me!Last edited by SIP2000GLO; 01-05-2011, 8:08 PM.Comment

Seriously, you must have rode the short bus for a very long time. As I have already mentioned numerous times, I'm talking about the TO packet. You are not required to submit transcripts with it, especially if you don't qualify for GS-7.There are quite a few people that started as GS-7 without any degrees. You seem to think everybody starts off at GS-7. I graduated from USC, but unfortunately my GPA wasn't high enough to qualify for their standard of "superior academic achievement" and was only approved for GS-5.
GS-7 without a college degree? Really?
Straight from their website:
GS-7 1 full academic year of graduate education or law school or
superior academic achievement
Last time I checked, you need to have graduated from a 4 year university in order to attend graduate school or law school, either that or have a high GPA from the 4 year university in which you graduated from.
Like I said boy, don't argue with me. I've been in the process for a while, have gone on ride-alongs, spoken to Supervisory Patrol Agents, and have friends in the Border Patrol. I know what I'm talking about.Last edited by Recession; 01-05-2011, 8:27 PM.Comment

Actually, yes... really. The requirements for GL-7 can be met either through experience or education. also straight from their website:
But let's keep it civil and not descend into arguments and personal attacks, guys... we're all just applicants... and we're all applying for the same job. Who knows... we may one day be backing each other up out there in the brush.Qualifying at the GL-7: It is extremely important for you to provide the documentation described below if you want to be considered for a grade GL-7. Your grade level will be determined based on the information you provide with your application. If you are offered a position as a GL-5 Border Patrol Agent (Trainee), and you accept, you cannot change your grade level once you enter on duty. Your application (Resume, OF-612, or SF-171) must completely and specifically describe your job duties that you want considered in the determination. All transcripts, calculations, and other documentation must be submitted to the CBP Minneapolis Hiring Center within 10 days of notification of selection Failure to provide this documentation will result in you not being found eligible at the GL-7 grade level. If you have one (1) year of Law Enforcement Experience comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to GL-5 you may qualify for GL-7. The CBP Minneapolis Hiring Center will determine what meets the specialized experience requirement. Experience must have demonstrated the ability to:
1. Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms:
2. Deal effectively with individuals or groups of persons in a courteous, tactful manner in connection with law enforcement matters:
3. Analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions or take prompt and appropriate law enforcement action in light of applicable laws, court decisions, and sound law enforcement matters:
4. Develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
All four items listed must be met in order to qualify at the GL-7 grade level based on experience. You must address all four of these items in your application
or
If you have one (1) full year of Graduate education in law or a field related to law enforcement (e.g. Criminal Justice, Police Science), you can qualify for the GL-7.
or
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): to qualify for the GL-7 under the SAA provision, you must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4 year college/university. SAA is based on (1) grade point average (GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all completed undergraduate courses, or courses completed in the last 2 years of undergraduate study, or a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all courses in the major field of study, or required courses in the major field completed in the last 2 years of undergraduate study; (2) class standing (applicants must be in the upper third of their graduating class in their college, university or major subdivision; or (3) honor society membership (applicants must have been a member of a national scholastic honor society other than freshman honor societies).

When I received my test result couple months ago, it says pay grade GL-7/GL-9 and my score. I think because due to my military service and currently I am a upper division college student (3rd year student: (2) class standing applicants must be in upper third of their graduating class in their college, university or major subdivision). Also, I do not have the highest GPA, but it is over 3.0 so that might be the reason why it says GL-7/GL-9 on my NOR. I know someone who took the test with me who has no military service and some community college units completed only says GL-5 on his NOR, according to him.
Anyways, like CPL.Haas said earlier, we all are in same boat so lets all try to get along. We all might be working together in the future (hoping we all get hire).Last edited by BoJackUSMC; 01-05-2011, 9:04 PM.Comment

I already have a B.A. in Psychology from USC but unfortunately only qualified for GL-5 for not having 1 year of graduate studies or having a high gpa or law enforcement experience. When I received my test result couple months ago, it says pay grade GL-7/GL-9 and my score. Hopefully you answered the questionnaire correctly.
According to what Cpl Haas posted, if you don't have law enforcement experience or 1 year of graduate school, then you would have to have the below:
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): to qualify for the GL-7 under the SAA provision, you must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4 year college/university.
You said you are currently still in school.
I'm not trying to be an ***, just pointing out maybe a possible mistake that can be corrected before it's too late.Last edited by Recession; 01-05-2011, 9:17 PM.Comment

hummm... thanks for the tip recession
I know for sure I put down "NO" on that section because I was only a 3rd year student. I knew for sure I had to attend CSU for more than 6 months to get my BA accounting. I am little confuse too.... But who knows what they might say at the end. They might say I might qualify for GL-7 or GL-5. At the end, I will be happy as GL-5. I just love working outdoor like Border Patrol Agents does.
Honestly, Recession I think you should qualify for GL-7 because of your education background. Man, I wished my GPA was high enough to attend USC, I could have gone to UCI, but they do not have accounting major there.Last edited by BoJackUSMC; 01-05-2011, 9:17 PM.Comment

So besides the whole higher education qualifications, the only other way to qualify for GL-7 is to have law enforcement experience.Actually, yes... really. The requirements for GL-7 can be met either through experience or education. also straight from their website:

I doubt SIP2000GLO was talking about that.Comment

Since the hiring process is so slow, you'll most likely have graduated by the time you get hired, so it really wouldn't matter if they messed up on the GL they assigned you because you would have met their criteria for GL-7 by then anyways. It's about where you're at by the time you get hired. The TO Part 2 will give you another chance to clarify what level you should be hired at.hummm... thanks for the tip recession

It's my own fault. During college I partied a little too hard and couldn't keep my grades up. Graduated with a 2.9 but the most important thing is, I finished.
Consider yourself lucky for not attending USC. I have over $60,000 in student loans i'm still paying off.
I'm totally fine with GL-5. I like a challenge anyways.
