Modifying issue guns?

Hello,

Just wondering if LEOs modify their department issued guns?

On one side: these are the guns that LEOs use to guard their lives everyday.

On the other side: these are guns that are loaned to them so why invest money in a gun that doesn't belong to them. That is assuming the department even allows them to modify their guns.

It depends on the department.On my issued Sig 226,I have the hogue checkered factory grips, tape on the frontstrape of the grip frame and nightsights
The department armor checked the gun over,and I was good to go.

I don't use an issued gun, I use my personal Sig P226. It came from the factory with the SRT so the only thing I have changed was to Hogue finger groove grips. That is an on mod. One of armorers is a Sig certified armorer and he can do the AEP if I ever want that.

Big no-no at my work to monkey with an issue weapon. Plus its a Glock, so what am i really going to do to it?

My dept armorer did the trigger job on my 92FS, within the spec., before I went through the armorers school myself. I do not use that gun. I use my personal Sig P226 9mm. I will buy it when I retire. No modification was authorized outside the spec. on dept guns.

IMO adding night sights and grips should not be a big deal w most dept armorers

If I had to carry an issued gun, and it wasn't a major violation, I'd have it tuned too. I'd want every advantage if I had to use it at work. My feeling is that the officer who gets it after me, would just be ahead of the game

My issued pistol at one time had CTC lasergrips which is an authorized modification if you take the "laser" pistol class. I carry a personally owned Sig P226R with an Insight WX150 light and a short trigger installed by Sig.

My Department doesn't allow us to modify the issued guns, beyond adding grips. The grips must be installed by the range staff. Modifications to personal weapons are highly regulated, and must be approved by the range.

One of my past employers issued, and nothing could be changed, period unless it was done by an armorer off a narrow list of approved changes. Don't like the grips, find another one in the rack with a grip you do like and sign out that one. Personally I always preferred to use my own, but in my last agency all mods to personally owned had to be signed off on.

The armorers I've known were always willing to do whatever was desired, so long as it was within department guidelines and didn't create any kind of a safety issue.

When I got out of the academy in 1976, I changed the stock wood grips on the issued S&W Model 15 .38cal revolver to some larger wood grips. I was ready to go. Didn't do anything to the Beretta 92f. Well, they changed the mag release to the right side since I am a lefty, that's it.

No mods to issued guns other than putting night sights on them and adding a M3 or M6 taclight/laser.

Same with your own gun that you use for duty.

Not sure if they are allowing the Express sights, Big Dots, or whatever else or if we have to use factory sights if we don't go with night sights. I know for sure that Laser that goes where the rear sight goes is not allowed and neither is Crimson Trace internal lasers since that is considered a modification to the recoil spring.

sights and grips-maybe but no modifications on trigger, barrel. magazine extensions, too much liability.

I am on the same Dept. that Retired worked for. Nowhere near his time on and experience though. When I came on, the first thing I did was add the Hogue grips w/ the finger grooves to my Beretta 92FS. Other than that, night sights, and CTC laser grips were the only other modification allowed.

And the only other on-duty gun even worth carrying was the HK USP .45/.45 Compact. However, within the last two years, my department has allowed the addition of a weapon light to the gun, and more guns (assorted Sigs and the S&W M&P 9mm/45mm).
We are in the process of switching out our old Ithacas with 870s w/ Surefire weapon light and Knox Spec Ops stock.

So, we've made some progress, but we still can't get our Dept to sign off on letters for our own patrol rifles (AR 15). It has been proposed and shot down (pun intended).

I mean come on! Chippies have them for Christ's sake! Why can't we!?
