Which eotech for on you duty ar?

I cant decide for either the eotech 553 or xps-2. Anyone have any experience with either one or could give me an insight on which way i should go. Another question fixed sights or flips for the front?

I use the 552 on one of my ARs. They really help you when you shoot support side. The 517 has the 1/3 sight co-witness in the window on an A3 and the side switches. IMO fixed sights on a duty AR.

My agency uses 512 on a Rock River Arms UTE2 upper receiver. All of our Colt AR-15 and semiauto converted M-16s are retro fitted to the RRA receiver with EoTech 512s.

I've seen a few guys running the XPS but the majority is T1 or M4.

553 on both my Stag and Sig556.

Most LEOs are not fortunate enough to have a department spring for Red Dots on their duty ARs. Plus Most LEOs have to do things on a shoe string budget even for their own personal weapons. Especially if they have two kids, a dog, a boat, a mortage, and a wife who likes to shop. My best friend is an LEO with all of the above, and 55% of his personal AR is made up of Christmas gifts from me. Nothing too crazy, just the good quality basics to get it finished. He never would have been able to have such a nice rifle otherwise, which means I wouldn't have a shooting buddy. So it was in both our interests that I spoil him every year come Christmas time. A $500+ optic, however, is not an option for him on either his personal or duty weapon. And I can't justifty that kind of Christmas gift, nor would he allow me to.

I just purchased an XPS 2.0 and a Larue mount for myself this Christmas. I am not an LEO, so I am not sure my opinion is the one you are looking for but I will offer it anyway. It is a very well made sight and so far I am very impressed with it. I've owned several EoTechs and Aimpoints in the past, and this one is the most impressive from both a fit and finish and usabality standpoint. I love the large window and reticle, the fact that it uses the same battery as my light, and that it is relatively light weight. I was running an Aimpoint T-1. The T-1 was much lighter, and had a longer lasting battery, but the surface area of the glass presented a problem. You could only see the red dot at a limited range of angles. So the larger window of the EoTech makes it much more practical in my opinion.

The Larue mount ia must for an EoTech without a built in riser. It gives you the right height to cowitness your irons in the lower 1/3 of the sight window. That is key. You can't just ditch your irons just because you have a red dot. Especially in your case where your life really does depend on your weapon, you need instant access to your irons. I would run them in the up position, and make sure they cowitness in the lower 1/3 so that you barely notice them when using the Red Dot. Murphy's Law is alive and well and ready to bite you in the ***. Plan accordingly.

But again, I am not sure I am the one you want advice from. I just sell this stuff and use it because I can, not because I need it for my job (haven't carried a rifle for living since the 90s). So I totally understand if you take my comments with a grain (or even large dose) of salt. I just wanted to try and be helpful.

No HWS on duty long arms. Open sights only. My personal AR has a 517 with a MBUS rear sight. I prefer the side controls for access.

I've got the 512 on my duty rifle. If I didn't already own it I would have gone for the XPS. I don't have a need for the NV capability of the other Eotechs. I'm not running a magnifier, so the rear buttons are fine for me. As far as flip up versus fixed sights, I'm using flip ups because that is what came on my Colt. I run them flipped down. The way I see it the Patrol Rifle is a deployment weapon rather than a quick defensive weapon. If there was a problem with my HWS I feel that I would have enough time to flip up my sights if needed. I'm sure we can all think of a scenario where my logic is flawed, but we could what-if everything if we really wanted to. I'm happy with it, and it works for me.

None! In fact, my duty AR isn't even an AR, but random Mini-14 drawn from a group in our station armory. To make up for the fact that they are Mini-14s, 95% of the Mini's at my station are over 30 years old, with the added feature that many of the rear sights either have or are starting to work their way loose from their mounts. Did I add that no one knows when they were last cleaned or sighted in? Or, the last time I grabbed one from the rack and tried to chamber a round the bolt got stuck halfway before chambering. But, hey, we're a progressive agency and if it wasn't invented here we want no part of it.

Sorry to hijack the thread. I just wish I could have such choices as to which optic to run. Best of luck on your search sir!

My favorite is the Aimpoint. I like the clarity of the Eotech sights, but will take the durability of the Aimpoint over it. Plus I don't like the 65 MOA ring and the only single dot Eotechs I've seen have 1 MOA dots. I prefer the 4 MOA Aimpoints.

I'm running a personally provided 512 for a few years (pre-XPS). I like the large view screen. The 65MOA circle with dot is really nice aiming system.

However if I were to do it again, I'd take a strong look at an Aimpoint ML3 for the continuous battery life aspect. Turn it on, leave it on and not worry about batteries for 8 years! For some recent deployments out of the car (think about being car #1 at a felony car stop), a few extra seconds that would have been saved would have been nice. I've also kicked down some spare batteries at training for guys that don't check there site regularly. Hate to have that occur on a call. The two units are within about $100 of each other.
