    Disposing of junk gun frame??

I have a handgun registered to me (in about 1986 or so) that is not worth fixing or keeping. I have stripped it down, removing every internal part for spares for other guns, to the bare frame and bare slide (both serialized) and I wish to dispose of the remaining parts and un-register it to me. I can easily cut the frame and slide up but the registration will still indicate I have the gun. How do I handle this?

You can turn them in to your local police for destruction, get receipt, and fill out the "no longer in possession" form with DOJ. You can also try one of the gun buy backs and get a gift card out of it too.

Why not take it to a gun shop and get a few bucks for it??? Or take it to the next gun buy back program.

        Make a few $$$

Go for the gun "buy back" programs. You can get some value out of it instead of just taking a loss. The local PD will get some "feel good" points in the press for getting another "gun off the street" It's a Win-Win.

Wait for a good deal on the gun buy back. They fluctuate between something useful like a $25 certificate to the grocery store to stupid tickets to a movie... to straight cash. Depends on your neighborhood.

I live in a semi-rural area and in the last 13 years I have never seen a local buy back program.

The gun is not practical to fix (needs a new slide and has very poor materials utilized throughout) and as such it is just scrap metal now. I just want it out of my name as a "registered handgun". I will drop the receiver and slide off at the local sheriff's office and get a receipt and fill out the suggested form.

Thank you all for the inputs.

Even when you fill out a NLIP form or sell it to someone else, the state does not erase the record of your (prior) ownership. Personally, I would just destroy it or, send it to Numrich and see if they'll give you anything for it along with any other gun parts you have and don't want. You'ld be selling it to a FFL and, it would go in their bound book. So, it's a better paper trail than anything else.

It is a FIE Tanfoglio TZ75 9mm. The retaining plate for the firing pin no longer is retained in the slide as the metal in the slide deformed. With no force to speak of from the firing pin spring, it speaks lowly of the metals used by Tanfoglio in the 1980's. While disassembling it to remove all the internals the cross pin that holds the gun together broke... a crummy cast part.

Not only are there no parts for this jewel, the remaining "good" parts are of questionable materials and I would not even consider passing this gun to someone else or fixing it. It has been floating around my gun safe broken for at least 15 years and I want it gone and out of registration against me.

I have a recent Tanfoglio EIA Witness in 45ACP that is a good gun so I sure don't know what happened in the 1980's to Tanfoglio guns?

The frame and slide will go to the Sheriff Station tomorrow when I run some errands. And I'll fill out the paperwork as suggested to get the gun off the registered listing.

I don't want this gun to go to anyone else as it might be dangerous (??). As long as I have a copy of the paperwork showing it left me I'll be happy with that. I photographed it which shows the serial numbers and I'll get a receipt from the Sheriff Station. I think I got it covered. Thank you all for the inputs.

Be sure to call the station beforehand and get their protocol of surrendering a firearm. I'd hate for you to walk into the lobby like "Yo!"

                          NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

                          It can be saved!!!!!

                          That essentially a cz75

I know a guy who's an expert on those...

Would you be willing to ppt it as a basket case?

that has the potential to be a GOOD gun.... yes, some parts will need to be rebuilt/heat treated/polished/reshaped.... but it CAN be fixed.

Selling it to Numrich would garrantee that it doesn't go to anyone. They will part it out plain and simple. as far as getting it out of your name, it really isn't going to happen. There will always be some sort of record you owning it in the Ca. registration system.
