Hello,
Looking for advice from LEO's or other knowlegable folks:
I live in a rural area and have a 100yd range in my backyard. There are no buildings within +/- 45degrees of the line of fire within 2 miles. My next door neighbor considers it unsafe, and has called the sheriff multiple times. Every time, the same result: The deputy looks at my range, tells me I'm shooting in a safe and legal manner, and that I can shoot all I want. One deputy suggested moving the range.
My backstop is within 50ft of the property line with my neighbors field. The line of fire does point towards her unused field, which is her main complaint. The neighbor has threatened to erect a barn on her land in my line of fire (behind my backstop), to prevent me from shooting. According to the deputy, a $300 garden shed would qualify as a building.
I am considering moving the range to attempt to improve neighbor relations, and eliminate unnecessary visits from local LEO's. I have a few questions in order to stay legal, that the deputy I spoke to was unclear on.
My county follows the CA state law regarding no shooting within 150 yards of a building, occupied or not.
Questions: Do you interpret the 150 yd rule from a building as meaning:
1a. The distance from the backstop to the building?
1b. The distance from the shooter to the building?
1c. Both must be 150yds from the building?
____________________________________________
2. Any laws regarding unoccupied buildings in the line of fire, but more than 150 yards behind the backstop?
3. There is another possible direction to shoot, into a 40 ft high gradual rise, with homes about 1 mile away down the other side. I was thinking of cutting a backstop in the side of this with a tractor. Would it be advisable to call a deputy to see if he would consider this direction safe?
Best Regards,
