    backyard gun range question

    Hello,
Looking for advice from LEO's or other knowlegable folks:
I live in a rural area and have a 100yd range in my backyard. There are no buildings within +/- 45degrees of the line of fire within 2 miles. My next door neighbor considers it unsafe, and has called the sheriff multiple times. Every time, the same result: The deputy looks at my range, tells me I'm shooting in a safe and legal manner, and that I can shoot all I want. One deputy suggested moving the range.

My backstop is within 50ft of the property line with my neighbors field. The line of fire does point towards her unused field, which is her main complaint. The neighbor has threatened to erect a barn on her land in my line of fire (behind my backstop), to prevent me from shooting. According to the deputy, a $300 garden shed would qualify as a building.

I am considering moving the range to attempt to improve neighbor relations, and eliminate unnecessary visits from local LEO's. I have a few questions in order to stay legal, that the deputy I spoke to was unclear on.

My county follows the CA state law regarding no shooting within 150 yards of a building, occupied or not.

Questions: Do you interpret the 150 yd rule from a building as meaning:
1a. The distance from the backstop to the building?
1b. The distance from the shooter to the building?
1c. Both must be 150yds from the building?
    ____________________________________________
    2. Any laws regarding unoccupied buildings in the line of fire, but more than 150 yards behind the backstop?

    3. There is another possible direction to shoot, into a 40 ft high gradual rise, with homes about 1 mile away down the other side. I was thinking of cutting a backstop in the side of this with a tractor. Would it be advisable to call a deputy to see if he would consider this direction safe?

    Best Regards,

I suggest going to your city hall and get the legal documents there, if allowed you can shut your neighbor up and avoid any problems from LEO's. I would believe the laws varies based on cities and county. If your city has a website visit that, they usually post up their laws

Your questions aside; you do realize, I hope, how jealous everyone here is of you having your own range right.

The 150 yard rule ( Fish and Game code sec. 3004 (a)) is the distance from where the shot is launched from. If the property line is 50' from your impact area and your neighbor puts the garden shed there, you will be shooting within that 150 yard rule and you're screwed.

Since you've already had visits by local LEO and told you are legal, there's likely no County ordinance prohibiting your shooting. Some Counties do have regulations regarding shooting.

You are probably better off moving your impact area. Is your neighbor really concerned over stray bullets landing into her field, or is she just anti gun and just doesn't like hearing the gunshots?

You have your own range? I see you live in canyon country. I live in littlerock and have an acre of land is that enough. How many acres of land do you have?

I think we all need to come and inspect the range and test it to make surre its really safe.

Well, everyone has something or another that other's could be jealous about. I see that macey109 lives in Newport Beach. Well, I wish I lived near the beach...

I never planned in advance to have a range. We were looking to move to a good environment for raising our kids a while back, and decided to move to a rural area. There is no shortage of chores, which has been a blessing in instilling an ethic of hard work and sacrifice in our kids. We did sacrifice some amenities that are usually taken for granted (the nearest decent sized town with a costco/restaurants/etc is over 15 miles away.)

                    Happy Thanksgiving to all,

I hate neighbors like that. Happened to me too. I just got subsonic ammo :-) let her buy a new shed and then move your range.

We shoot on my property also and I say if they put a building up just change the angle you shoot so they need to move the building and or ask what direction "she thinks" is "safe" and explain that law enforcement is fine with your doing... Try to fix it but explain your trying and she is brake checking you but she will not stop you... They more she pushes the MORE you will shoot. The cooler she is the less you will shoot.

CSACANNONEER, we're a little under a mile from a paved road.

center x, subsonic ammo is great for our .22, but we often enjoy shooting a M1 garand also...
