    metalliman545,

With just a year left of active duty I would get the process started anywhere you can. Local and Federal. Most hiring processes take about 1 year, and up to 2 years. I would apply with the USBP (Border Patrol) because they have an open announcement right now and love prior military.

Kern County Sheriff is hiring. (POST cert) They are still having student academies too. They got a grant for 27 new deputies and there is talk of many more new hires. Their new contract is going to cause many of the older deputies to retire. (unless they are able to work out a different deal)

To the OP, when is your contract up? Are you interested in federal work in the US and overseas? It requires becoming a federal LEO and getting through FLETC in Georgia. Go to USAjobs and lookup state dept., special agent diplomatic security. This job will have you moving around a lot, so if you are interested in staying in one place to plant roots and have a stable career, it's not for you. The dept has undergone a hiring surge this year and it will likely last until the middle of next year, then it might get cut off again. With the new congress on a war path to cut spending, you'll have to put together an application before your contract is up so you can get into an orientation class once you are released from the military. Also, you will need to qualify for a TS clearance, so if you won't qualify for one, your chances are zero.
