still lookin down for a lot of cities. But here is the thing about that. These cities will spend like 2 years on a hiring freeze or actually laying officers off. Then a year or so from now when the departments are way down on their staffing levels and all the officers are having to work their asses off to make up for it the departments will have to start hiring.

there's a lot of guys getting ready to retire.

Hiring is way down. The departments that are hiring seem to all be requiring POST certification, some accepting POST attendees.
Every once in a while, a department opens for non-laterals, but those job openings are LOADED with applicants... way to many.

In other words, its tough. Things may change in a year or two I hope.

Amen to this. One of the departments I applied for had +/- 2000 applicants for 2 positions, or so I was told. Even if they are accepting apps from academy grads your still at a disadvantage with so many laterals looking for work.

Slim to no hiring right now. Onesie-twosies are about it. Santa Ana opened up and they were bombarded with apps. I applied and was told no thanks. I was pushed out because I am not Spanish speaking (unofficial info from a bro who works there already though)

some departments are starting to prepare for small amounts of hireing. That will begin to grow in about a year. We are down over 400 already and that number grows every month with retirements. By the time you are done with your military service, the hiring will probably begin to rise. I highly recommend that you take advantage of some of the online college courses that the military offers. Veterans get much deserved credit for their service, but there will be alot of competition, so the more you have to offer, the better your chances of getting hired quickly. Thanks for your service

granted im not an mp but ive done tons of warrant searches/arrests since weve been out here. im sure they are a lot different then what cops usually do. sneak up middle of the night kick down doors throw everyone down. find who we want throw em in a trunk and drive off. haha, but im sure its related somehow haha.

These days just military experience is not enough to get hire. After getting out from the service you might want to focus earning your college degree with your GI Bill. Also, make sure you get useful college degree while at it. Pre-law, Computer science or forensic, and accounting comes handy.

I thought criminal justice was a desired degree... I have a number of LEO friends who say they are also looking for people with degrees in English.

I ran into a Riverside County Sheriff Backround Investigator a few days ago and he said his dept. is hiring. I didn't think to ask him if it was for laterals only, but since he didn't*say it was, I would surmise it is open to all.

LAPD just had a huge thing hiring minorities. It was advertised all over my school campus. Other then that I heard Glendora recently had 2 openings and got over 1k applicants.

The LE economy is looking down in general, but many departments are still hiring. We have not taken a single pay cut or lost our uniform allowance. We continue to replace positions and have had recruits in the academy every year. Lateral officers get preference, but we are still hiring and sending to the academy as well.

Overtime has been reduced greatly over the past 3 years or so, but we still have it. We try to burn off what we can, but are always paid for any critical incident: officer shootings, armed robberies, homicides, ect.

Apply, apply, apply you will get hired eventually.

Since you got a year left, start on some online classes and start on your degree. Its FREE! with Tuition Assistance. Save up your GI Bill for the real meat and potatoes when you get out! If you have money left over, you can start on your masters OR, do something cool like pilot training or learn a trade.

The thing is don't wait any longer than now to go to school, even if you decide to stay in and you get your degree, it makes you that much more competitive for rank.
