Patrol guys, if they don't buy their own, are issued a 20" barrel AR.

If you buy your own, 16" is the shortest barrel we can deploy. Couldn't tell you about SWAT. They are super secret.

I'm just curious as to why they do not. Seems from my understanding and reading that it costs more to pay for hearing disability of a single officer. Then it would be to outfit the whole department with suppressors.

I'm running a Colt M4LE. The semi-auto 11.5 inch. No hearing loss yet. Its not everyday you shoot it while out on patrol. I like the short, light weight barrel. Suppressors would add some length and forward weight to the rifle.
In addition, many agencies would look at it as being an unnecessary cost and perhaps too intimidating.

Not that its too big of a deal, but the rifles get very dirty with a suppressor on them. The magazines as well.

I do not have the need for a heavy barrel or a longer one. I get accurate hits to 200 yards. I have never tried it past there.

I also have a SBS, 14" 870 right next to my Colt.
