Not accurate. Any RAW can go with you when you retire, resign or go to another department. A Class III weapon however, is registered to the department and must be turned in upon departure. Very few people in this state, LEOs or not, are able to get an endorsement for a Class III weapon.

Sage advice, as usual, in the two posts above. To recap...

*** If a gun belongs to the agency, it stays with the agency when you term employment. Exception would be if the agency allows you to buy your handgun when they don't want to issue it any longer. The turn in requirement includes any and all NFA items that you might be issued in the course and scope.

*** If you paid for the gun out of your own pocket, you take it with you when you term. Even if it is an AW. That's the purpose of allowing LEO to register an AW that they've purchased on their own.

Not a lawyer, just a former LEO proud to have served.

I am in the process of getting my OLL registered at an AW. I found an AW dealer that will buy the rifle from me and convert it, and then sell it back back to me as an AW with all the DOJ paper work. Now I am just waiting....still for a letter from my Chief.

I see you are new with only six posts so I'll pass this hint along. Make sure of your facts before posting or open yourself up to getting flamed.

            Welcome to CalGuns.

            Aloha,

            Aloha Ron,

I've heard it both ways.... I hope you're right but the way the law is written and the way it has been explained to me by several AWB shops and a few admin people it is for "duty purposes".

I don't want to get in a flame war with anyone as that is counter productive and I have respect for everyone on here until proven otherwise. Again my intent was not to start a flame war just to put out there what I know. Lookign back at the post I can see how I worded it wrong. And yes I've not posted too much LOL.

            Thanks for the welcome!!

LOL Ron I agree with you the problem is these same admin lieutenants and captains are the ones who make life miserable for you if you contradict them or make them look bad.

Just saying and I do agree with you!! :-)

Threw your back out... 4850 time baby ... LOL :-)

I'm already on 4850 time for a back & knee injury, which has really put a damper on my shooting. Sticking to my .22's right now, but really want to go shoot my Garand and Mosin M44.

I've been off 3 months and the only thing they've approved is 6 physical therapy sessions. My doctor said I needed knee surgery the first visit and we're still waiting for the green light. That will be surgery #4 for the right knee.

Carefull with the lieutenant jokes...........but I'm nobody's admin pogue, and I'll never see captain's bars. I'm not humping anyone's leg for that. Destined to finish my career as a "line swine" and damn proud of it. 32 years and I've never worked anything but a uniform position.

Hey I'm not a LEO but I would like to add this. An AW in CA is not illegal per se, it's the way that AW is aquired and if there is paper for that gun is where the legality starts to come into question. You aquired your AW 100% above the board and filed the paperwork then you keep that gun. Same goes for hi cap mags, sure you can buy them with LEO ID, but if you get the axe or medically retire you still keep them because they are aquired legally.

Oh, BTW stay safe out there.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

LOL no offense on the Lt. thing its how high you get up the chain of command and if you remember what its like to be a line guy that counts. One of my good friends is an Lt. for ACSO, he still remembers what it's like to be a line guy and is respected for it.

Sorry to hear about the injuries.
