I know Sep is a few months off, but look into it However, I implore you to look into FLEO http://www.usajobs.gov/ plug in 1801 or 1811 just keep in mind FLEO is more mission focused, opposed to local/state LEO wide spectrum duties

Rumors are spreading that there is some kind of "hiring freeze" because of a number of factors. Is there any truth to this?
CHP is still hiring although they are not currently taking applications. My understanding is there are enough in the pipe already. They are due to accept applications for a short window (48 hours I think) sometime in July. Good thing is you're not going to be competing with a lot of laterals as CHP does not take laterals without making them go through the CHP academy. Bad thing is there are a whole lot of people in front of you in line. You will have a short crack at it so have your ducks in line when you apply.

I'll be brutally honest with you: This is just a bad time to be an FNG, or to try getting on with any LE Agency as a new hire...and it will probably get worse before it gets better.

as long as it gets better within two years when I'm done with school. I'm tired of this hiring freeze business, I want to start my career.

I just read on another thread that 80 more cops are gonna be laid off--That's just 80 more unemployed candidates that are more qualified than me. It's a real tough situation.

Is there a similar job I could get that's related, just to get my foot in the door? Like as a bailiff or dispatcher? Is there anything else? I just finished school and I need a new job, even if it's not my career yet, I'd like to do something that'll give me a bit of a leg up when the jobs do start opening up.

Reserves. If your lucky some agencies even pay their reserve officers.

The link he gave is CBP, not ICE; you are correct about the hiring freeze though. However, the hiring should resume after the fiscal year, which is some time in Oct.
